silvercrew i agree with you 100% and in the perfect world i would have the cooler removed completly and maybe this summer when the motorcycle is back on the road and i'm not relying on the truck as daily transportation i will get a chance to do it. but givin the situation and only being able to dedicate a day or 2 having the truck off the road in your eyes what would be better...leave it stock as is, or plug the pipe? keep in mind that what might take you an hour to do might take me 3...not all of us work on these trucks for a living. i definiely value the information that all the techs post and thank all of you very much. these forums are very rich with info.
Time and money are always a factor. To some it's wasted in truck down time, to others it's just another mod and it's time well spent. Let the end user decide what his time and money are worth.
The modded up-pipe works, it's by no means a cure all for the problem.
Is a EGR cooler delete ket as good as the EGR removal. I have the uppipe to go in but now it is going in for HG and I was going to have them do the Elite kit when the HG is done.
The EGR cooler delete and EGR removal are two different things. If you only remove the EGR valve the exhaust still enters the EGR cooler leaving a possibility of the cooler rupturing. Removal of the EGR cooler is prefered because it removes the potential of coolant entering the intake of the motor. Some people do both, some just delete the cooler, it's your call.
If you are having a HG job done then by all means get the EGR cooler deleted at the same time.
I am wanting to do the up pipe mod and block off the egr cooler dose any have an 06 6.0 who has done this with the egr valve still bolted to the intake mainfold with out a CEL light coming on? also what was used to block off the egr cooler itself after the mod was done?

I have done the exact thing you want to do, I get no CEL light or codes. My Truck came from Idaho.
I replaced my Turbo up-pipe with out the up scoop, installed the blocker plate so exhaust no longer enters the cooler.
The EGR valve is still plugged in and no problems here.
My .02 this is a priority up grade, the complete delete is the best option.

The reason for the CEL is stock programing. Once you use an SCT with custom programing, the CEL will disappear.

Once you remove your up pipe, cut the "y" flange going to the cooler and remove the scoop out from the pipe. Weld a cap over the flange and reinstall it with the oem gasket and clamp back on to the cooler. Voila, your done.
