Cool SCT install - very frustrated

For my 6.0; this is the X3. I got the tunes downloaded to my computer, installed drivers for the X3 and now can't get the computer to recognize the X3 to update firmware. Tech support said since my device doesn't power up when I plug it in the USB then it isn't getting enough juice, either from the computer or through the cable GRRRRRRRR. The cable is a Belkin 10 ft 2.0, not gold-plated contacts or anything but maybe it's too long and losing too much juice? Anybody else had this problem? I'm ready to body-slam something.
I tried it on a different computer downstairs and it powered up for about 3 seconds and went blank.

10 feet is probably to long, USB seems to loose power fast. Also make sure you are using the rear USB ports on your computer. Front ones sometimes do not provide enough power.

If you're using a laptop make sure it's plugged in.

OK, I guess the first A-B cable I bought is junk. I bought another Belkin, this one only 6 ft with gold-plated contacts. Found it at Sears for ~$15. Seems to work fine when I plug it into the front USB port on the computer.
Radio Shack had comparable cables for 2-3 times the price

I use a Gold X 6' 2.0 cable with gold plated connectors that are interchangable for my X2.

OK, finally decided to start over on a different computer with tech support on the phone. Went smooth as silk. Can't wait to head out and put the tunes in!

I've had the tunes in about a week. That first cable screwed me up and I must have done something in the wrong order because I couldn't get tunes downloaded at home. Started over as I posted above, downloaded and installed Eric's extreme street, and I've given the tranny time to learn.
In short - DAYUM!! My new favorite place is the freeway on-ramp! This thing hauls four tons of @$$!! And mileage is up too.
I love a happy ending.

I did my homework but will say that I haven't tried anything else. That said, I do recommend the SCT with custom tunes. I've read the canned ones that come with some SCT tuners (like the Flashpaq) just aren't up to snuff, and why put up with that when you can have custom ones for $50 more?
I dealt with Innovative Diesel and it was a fine experience. Reading around, there are others writing some great tunes as well.
Another thing, these tune writers claim the basic custom tunes are safe for 6.0s with the stock head bolts that are a known weak spot. You can take your chances with that claim but I plan to keep my truck for a long time so I went ahead and replaced the stock stuff with ARP head studs and the updated Ford head gaskets. I also incorporated other mods for longevity (EGR cooler block, CCV bypass, blah blah blah).

It is substantial. You can do it yourself but it is a full weekend job for an experienced diesel mechanic. If you go that route then seriously consider the EGR cooler blockoff.
