Hey man, glad to hear you're getting along with the project alright. Mid-Fifties covers are alright, but with any of the "kits" much like paintwork or anything for that matter. Preparation is most of what you see in the end. First strip your seat down to the bare springs. Then get some "edge wires" and clips to secure them to EACH and EVERYONE of your zig-zag springs on your seat. I usually use 2 wires at least, and maybe 3 depending on how heavy you are. Run these wires from side to side. They tie all the springs together. IF you cant get edge wires and clips, (furniture suppply store) then get an 1/8" sheet of plastic and cut it to the size of your springs, this will reinforce your springs and make it more solid. These old seats werent much to start with.
After you get the springs built up, you need to get some new foam. On our custom seats, we just ditch the springs all together and weld some 1/8" steel over the tube frame and make the entire seat out of different densities of foam to acheive the total height of the original seat. Feel free to email me and I'll do my best to help.
We just finished putting in a Mid Fifty kit. The quality was excellent and fit well. We used the foam from Mid Fifty as well. We used 2" seat foam over the springs that were in the original seat. It all worked out quite well. Good Luck.
i got missing springs and other parts in my seat , and broken ones , and have been trying to find a source for the parts . i can't recall seeing anything in any catalog , including the mid fifty one , so am i just blind or ya gotta part no. ???? gonna make seat covers myself with whit vinyl and green metal flake vinyl .
Insted of going with a basic seat, I opted to go a little more on the kustom side, and it came out great.
Red metal flake tuck and roll, and the white is a pearl.
I know you are out in Dallas but it's a great time to give my buddy some props and brag about my seat. it's the prudyest thing on the truck.
I need to upholster 2 bench seats...and want 2 tone red/black or all red.
Something that I never got into much was upholstery....need a pro for that...in my case!!

well i have several seat frames that i would like to rebuild. truxx1956 what type and density of foam do you use and where do you get it. also both my trucks are still fully sprung so the suspension doesnt really move that much so all the road bumps get transfered to the seat causeing head hitting on the roof on big bumps lol would getting rid of the springs and going with all foam be better or worse for this.

Hey man, we get ours from a place called Ohio Valley Upholstery Supply, in Owensboro, KY. The very dense foam is S95, you'd want about3" of that, and about 3" of what we call church pew foam for the top. I think all foam is better than springs, but its my opinion. I do not like springs at all, cause of the way they work and feel, but as I said, that's what I am use to also.
For any of you cats out there who need springs, I have an extra seat that still has springs in it. I am planning on taking them out and if you need some, I'd be glad to give you them if you'll pay the shipping costs. (just a thought)
Just had the Corbeau seats in my son's Mustang recovered. We bought facvtory Corbeau covers, and took them to a pro. I like doing my own work, but this is one area where a pro job really shows, even when it's just as simple as putting new covers on. He had to repair the foam in several places, reinforced the foam where it gets wear from getting in/out, etc. All in all, we spent $200 for the cover kit and $250 for the labor, but have essentially brand new seats. Best part, it was done in 2 days!
well i doubt it ross , and even if you are i'd still say / call you freind !! to many of the chainers here wont have anything to do with me , my truck , or some others i know as we dont have a million invested in a trailer queen , but thanx for the tips raerjim and truxx ! i for one will be getting the stuff from one or another , i did buy another seat that other than a ripped up cover is good , and the left door { custom cab } for the door lock internals for 30 bucks yesterday .... so i may not need springs , but the other yep !
In the late 50's my friend had a 53 Merc. His interior was completed in south Texas. The Mexicans can sew a mean stitch. I hope mine comes out 1/2 as good. Looks very cool !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! chuck
