Noob question :P

Hi all, have been looking through the forums for the past week or so and am very impressed with the info that is shared and amount of people on it.

I am currently saving up to get a excursion and leaning towards the V10, but I have not been able to find info anywhere on what type of gas the V10 takes. Is it 87 or 91 octane? Thanks again for the great website.

Thanks, good to know. I also have seen through the forum that early X's had thread problems with the spark plugs and need to be torqued down. Early as in 2000 and 2001, problem fixed in 2002? Was this a recall issue like the lightning so all should be fixed, or does the the thread holes need to be re threaded (like the lightning) or just need to make sure that the plugs are torqued properly?

I also recall reading that the 4speed transmission is a weak link, due to a torque converter bolt and the problem was fixed in the 2005's? Is there a fix to this problem or should I just narrow my searches to 2005?

Lastly, I have seen a few X's with lifts, bigger tires, and gear swaps, I know the speedometer needs to be re-calibrated but does the overhead console that tells your mpg need to be reprogrammed too or is it fixed with the speedometer?

As always thanks for the input and hope to join the X club soon!

I just remembered something else, the cam sensor problem? What year X had that problem? Is that a simple replace and its fixed or a problem that you keep fixing and live with?

Cam sensor = 7.3L Diesel not the V10

Speedo should be re-calibrated only after tire size change. No need if a gear sap is done since the speedo gets its info from the ring gear. Once re-calibrated everything that uses the speed as a input value will show correct info.

Keep the plugs torqued properly in an older V10. No recall was every issued but a little attention to the torque every 15-20K miles should make sure everything stays where it should.

The 4R100 is not a weak link when behind the V10 (imo). Behind a built PSD it has issues. Even with the 525lb ft version 7.3L PSD, the tranny was right at its input limit.

If you're looking at a V10 , I personally, would look at anything 03+. I like the 03 trucks, though. They have the most content in them. Later years they began to decontent them....ie hood blanket, door lights etc. I like my 05 because I prefer the front end over the other years.
