4:30's In an Excursion

Are 4:30 LS gears in an Excursion Rare ?

Hey all just recently started looking at Excursions, drove a 00' V-10 Limited w/3:73's, open rear, about 95k on it,,asking $9900.00, did an Oasis report all came up clean,,This Excursion had dual exhaust coming out under the bumper,,She sure had a cool exhaust note to it,,Raspy/Indy car sound,,,we liked it!,, went out for a test drive,,3 of us,, plus salesman,,,,Instantaly it's pulling to the left,,did notice a softer LF tire,,truck ran nice, heated up pretty quick, (was 19 degrees), very comfy for all of us,,,,as I got on it,, merging on to a highway,,it moved ok for 3:73,,,but could'nt help but think with any of my 3 bigger trailers,,that it would be working for sure!

As I got out after the test drive,,,could smell something,,HOT/Burning,,was the left front caliper,,,yep she was froze up,,and cooking HOT,,even burned my finger tip,,,Damn thats hot!,,other rotors just warm,,,well one reason it's pulling to the left ! Salesman was putting it in the shop when we left!

When we got home from the 1st Ex's test drive, I asked to get an Oasis report on a 2nd Excursion in my area( thanks Krewat,,great responce and feature),,,Oasis came up clean,,only some brake work,,etc,,,but the report says this 00' Excursion Limted,V-10,has the 4:30LS for gears,,which I like much better,,,I call the Guy,,still has the Excursion,,new brakes, new shocks, new tires on the truck,,about 100k on it,,asking $8995.00,,Going to check this Ex, out for sure !
The guy said it was his dads, (a smaller car dealer) used it for pulling sleds up north, etc, will see if they put it on a lift to check out for rust, they bought a crew cab pickup now,,,so Ex is for sale,,he says it in excellent condition,,will see !,,,Later,,Mark

PS,,The Excursion is built on an F-250 frame ,,,right ??

4.30 Excursions are rare. I think but cannot confirm, that they probably account for 5% or so of all V10 Excursions.

If you can get a nice clean one I say go for it. If you don't like the 4.30s, it is much easier to regear by trading gears with someone going down rather than up (numerically).

The Excursion's front frame is the same as the F-250/350. From about the front doors back, it's all Excursion specific.

$9K is too much. That truck is a $6K or less truck. Pull the reports for Kelly Blue Book (et al) and show the seller.

I bought mines last year and the Oasis report showed it had the 4.30 gears from the factory. If towing anything over 8000 I would highly recommend them. I am still able to get 14-16 mpg on the highway depending on conditions so the talk about economy suffering I think is blown out of proportion. I think the state of tune and the lead in the foot impact economy much more than the gears. My 98 Explorer 5.0 AWD wasn't much better and definitely couldn't pull what this can.

I would suggest a comprehensive search including local newspapers, Ebay, Craigslist (incl nearby cities), trader.com, cars.com and even the free classified sections of truck and Rv'ing internet sites like RV.net and here (mines is posted) will give a much broader more cost effective pool than going to the dealers.

Book values are a good starting point when negotiating but finding a good clean less than 100K mileage for less than 6K wouldn't be easy in my neck of the woods. The ball joints, lock actuators, and brakes are components that tend to need attention on a used Ex.

Why not get a diesel? If you are towing it may be the way to go.

m350,
Where in eastern CT are you- I spent about two months looking for my X- there are some nice ones out there- but the prices are very high if you stay in our state- I ended up looking at one in Northern MA and found mine for 6700 (with 4.30's-and they do make a difference!!!)- and felt that I got a decent deal on it at that time- I know you can find them all day long between 9k and 12k, some haggling brings those prices down some- but once a truck is listed in these parts under about 8k, they dont seem to last long- atleast thats what I noticed towards the end of last year (Oct & Nov)-but they are out there- and when you find them be ready to go look and make a decision, as I said- they dont seem to last long when the price gets under 8k
That one with the dual exhaust...... was it grey in R.I.-at a small dealer? if so- its been for sale for a long time- and they started up around 12k for it, and at that time the guy said that he was already below what he paid for it.
Good luck shopping!!

Ok here is what I am thinking,,,Right now I have an 06' F-350 6.0 in my sig and gallery,,been a great truck,,,Just got payments,,and whoever has to sit in the rear seat,,,well not comfy,,,thinking if I could get $25k or so for my truck,,pay off the 19k or so,,that I owe,,,and put the rest on an Excursion thats about $7 k or so,,will have a didly amount to finance and be done with payments soon,,Happy back seat worker's,,keep tools in the back,,just like in the F-350 with the cap on it.
I also plow snow,,have a Fisher 9' Blade,,talk to a Fisher dealer,,can only put a 7.5 ft HD. plow on an Excursion,,,Why,,because they feel 8 people will be riding with you when plowing snow,,,yeah ok ! Anyway,,I can get the truck mount to fit it/F-250 and push my 9' blade with the Excursion,,,about $1,800 mounted to the EX. or I can mount it my self,,did it before. May have to add a leaf or 2 to each front spring, (hmmm small lift time),,maybe a different alt too.

Would only do a Excursion deal,,if I get enough for my 06' F-350 to make it worth while.

Tracy,,,The dual Exhaust one was Red,,,It did sound awsome though ! I really like the look of your lifted Excursion,,,,what type of lift is it,,and how much ???
Did you do it yourself ?

Oh I live in Canterbury Ct.,,,,,,,,Mark

I just did the lift about 2-3 weeks ago- its a superlift 5" lift- and I like it- got the kit with shocks for about $1100 and shipping was free- installed it with a friend- wasnt too hard at all to do-its alot easier with someone helping!!

I have a 8' western plow on my X. No problems with it. How can i find out what gears my v10 has in it? I have a 32' travel trailer that weighs 10500lbs and it pulls it no problem, so it makes me wonder what gears it has. I can get an oasis report, but how do i get it....does it cost anything? THANKS!!

Just look at the door jamb. Under axle it will give you the 2 digit axle code. Search here as the codes have been posted hundreds of times.
