When the 6.4 was new, the most commonly recommended engine oil was 5w40. Right away my dealership said that had changed. When they serviced my truck (they asked to be allowed to do it first time) they put in 15w40. Last October, I had my front main seal replaced and the ticket again says they used 15w40.
What is the wisdom on whether we should be using 5w40 vs. 15w40? I have Archer Gold 15w40 CJ-4/SM parasynthetic on hand that I only use in this engine. As cold as it's been, I'm wondering if I should be using 5w40. Archer Petroleum has just released Gold (synthetic) 5w40 CJ-4/SM. When the 6.4 was first out they drug their feet on it a little. I've used Archer Lubricants since I was a kid. They have as good a warranty as any lubricant I know and have performed very well for me. An added bonus is that they provide free oil analysis. All it costs is the postage to submit the sample. They provide everything else, including a phone call if they encounter a problem. I went to 15w40 on my dealer recs and the fact that Archer had it available in a CJ-4/SM. Now I'm wondering!!! Thanks!

Reason: typo
I have seen a chart with the recommended viscosities...probably on here, but not sure. It showed 15w40 for normal temps...5w40 wasn't needed until outside temps got below zero.
No change have been made in the oil recommendations. What is listed above is still valid and is also shown in the workshop manual which is regularly updated...
So the best protection against the cold is 5w40 for most of us in the north
and my dealer rec. 15w40 is that not retarded. wtf !!!
This is what I was tring to figure out last nov.
Anyone else running 15w40 up in north country ??
north I mean Boston, not north of the border
In BC, the Ford dealers will use 10W0-30 in the winter and 15W-40 in summer. You must have 15W-40 or 5W-40 to tow. That is why I use 5W-40 Mobil 1. The 5W-40 can be used from -20F/-29C to 100F/38C. 15W0-40 is not recommended by Ford below 20F/7C. Below this temperature you can use 10W-30 but cannot be used for heavy duty driving or trailer towing.
