Engine oil

I got my hands on 10 gallons of john deere torque guard 10w-30 its cj-4/sl rated. I checked the john deere website and it says its sl and sm rated. Think its safe to use? Any oil guys out there wanna chime in. Isnt the sl sm rating for gas engines?

what does the container have on the label as the rating? You can used C rated oils in a gasoline engine but not the standalone S rated oils in a diesel.

That list is approved CK4. AFAIK, all CJ4 oils are fine and the OP listed his JD oil as CJ4. Should be good to go.

Right on. As long as it's CJ4, you're good.

Just my two cents ---- if your warranty is of any concern to you, I wouldn't use it if it's not on Ford's list and I don't see it on the "approved" list.

That list is for the new CK4 oils. ALL CJ4 oil is approved.

Just an FYI. Ford does not recommend 10w-30 if running biodiesel.

Check your pump. Murphy Mart (Wally World) around me have a sticker on the pump saying the fuel is 5%-20% biodiesel.

No bio within 2000 driving miles or so of me... I'd run your free CJ-4 oil too. While I prefer 5w-40, too many blackstone UOAs show that there is absolutely nothing wrong wtih 10w-30 oil. I like the 5w part of 5W-40 because of where I live...
