OK, I was planning on using a Comp 35-349-8 for my 94 5.0 build (Conanski approved). Here are my specs, 94, 5.0, SD, hyper pistons, ported polished e7's, long tube headers, 5 speed manual. Computer is coming out of a 1990 5.0 so I'm assuming SD.
Someone has suggested to me the 35-310-8. A little more of the 'lopey' sound at idle but still good mid-range performance and decent gas mileage. They have experience with it in a 5.0 but with Mass Air.
In any event here's a list of what I would consider good candidates for a 5.0 truck motor, the 5.0 starts to get get peaky with duration beyond the mid 260 deg range and that's why I don't think the 35-310-8 is a good choice here. The cam I have produces a pretty broad powerband but could use more gearing in my heavy ext-cab 4x4, it's not bad but a bit weak compare to the 5.8. The list has cams with 112 and 114 deg LSA, all these will work on an SD motor but the 112 versions may produce a more unstable idle. Cams with the really short 0.050" duration like the Crane 364211 would be an exception and would have stock like idle with better than average low rpm TQ. The reason to use a cam with shorter LSA is because it will produce more TQ, 114deg compromises the powerband a little in favor of better idle characteristics.
Paul,
Is the idle the main reason you might shy away from this? I actually like a little rough idle on this application. Short bed 2wd fun truck. No hauling or towing.
The link didn't work like I though it would so here's a capture of it. If you would like a noticable idle and don't have to worry about passing a sniffer test there's no reason not to choose a cam with 112 LSA.
Thanks Paul, yes, replacing a 6 cylinder so I have a donor truck (its even a runner) for computer, harness, engine perches etc.
Sniff test is no problem here (NC) for a 94.
Am I missing something? The 35-349-8 looks to have longer duration than the 35-310-8, is that right or am I reading it wrong?
I would like a little rough idle so I guess I would lean towards a 112. I also like the price of the Crane's!
The 35-310-8 is not in that list, and that's because it's a 270 duration cam which is a bit much for a 5.0 truck motor... IMO. The Crane 444211 or Comp 35-320-8 are probably what you want.
