I posted these pix in the 73-79 forum and now I'm concerned about the safety of my experiment. I have two 2 1/4" pipes running over the top of the gas tank with about 3-4" between the tank and pipes.
I made this by cutting the pipe at angles and welding it back together. Laugh if you want, but I have dual exhaust and it only costs $50 including the cheap-o Cherry Bombs.
So, what do you think? Am I gonna blow myself up driving this?
Nope, it's safe. Make sure you check for leaks if you havn't already, by holding your hand next to all the connections while the engine is running.
Primary rig is Green Thunder:

Check out my Gallery for a look-see.
Then theres:
99' Mustang GT 4.6L
88' F-250 Heavyduty 4x4 351/c6
95' Mercury Cougar 4.6L V-8
80' E-350 300/6 with a
3 spd column shifter. Weighs around 7,000lbs w. 65mph top speed, who wants to race me!
I have plastic backup lights about an inch to the side of my exhaust tips (gotta move them but havn't been able to yet) and they don't even melt.

Hey you know what you could do is, wrap the pipes in header tape to keep them cool, the do like he said and put a heat shield between the tank and the pipes.
I would say what you have done is a lot safer than most. Usaully you see truck with duals ran directly beneath the gas tank. Corect me if I am wrong but last time I checked heat rises.
BTW I see what appears to be copper tubing ran to the tailpipes, is that what I think it is .

Unfortunately, no. But I am working on that. I just can't find a good article on how to do it myself.
What you see is the bent steel rod I used to make the hangers for the pipes. I used 1/4" dia. steel stakes, bent them, and welded them to the muffler clamps. They're painted orange and I haven't had time to repaint them black yet.
