i have a code i cant get rid of , it says bank 1 and bank 2 lean. everyone i have talked to swears that i have a vacum leak. but i cant find NOTHING. i failed to get an inspection sticker due to the check engine ligth being on. any ideas ...cause im pulling my hair out.. thanks
Well..If you just want to get through inspection, pull the light out temporairily,IF it passes you can put the light back in,and at least that would buy you some time to do some troubleshooting. If however it doesent pass, find out what the failing results are...this may help pinpoint the root problem.
Personally I say that a lean indication should be MUCH better on emissions than rich
First off, just pulling the bulb out probably won't get it passed on the inspection.
In Pennsylvania at least, they check to see if the check engine light comes on during the self test, and then they use a code reader to do the actual emissions test on the OBDII vehicles.
You won't pass with an active code for sure, and I believe also with some pending codes.
I know of people who have failed the emissions for active trans codes.
As far as the actual problem, if you're positive that you have no vacuum leaks, I'd start checking all of the things that could cause a lean condition.
Fuel pressure, airleaks in the intake after the MAF.
I suppose bad O2 sensor could give you a problem, but I would think that it's unlikely that they both failed at the same time.
If you have any leaks in the intake after the MAF, you have air getting into the engine that the ECM doesn't know about. That'll give you a lean condition for sure.
You don't give any details about your truck...engine, year...
I have read about the 5.4 having issues with an elbow or something in the PCV system rotting out. Another source of unmetered air....
i have changed the plugs , wires, air filter, pcv valve, all have help but i still have the code. and yeah N.C. hooks up to the computer and with ANY codes shwoing no matter what , they will not let it pass.
What n3up said, vacuum leaks or un-metered air after the MAF. The MAF sensor reads the amount of air entering the engine. Any leak of air into the system after the MAF throws the air/fuel ratio off and will cause the wngine to run lean.
Look over the air cleaner, intake duct and check for anything out of place. There are hoses that connect to the duct that you may have knocked off. The PCV hose connects tothe back of the intake manifold and is notorious for causing these codes. Good luck!
I had check engine light and the code lean on bank one when I was trying to run with a used Granatelli MAF. I swapped my old MAF back in and everything cleared up. The tech at Granatelli asked me if I cleaned the MAF and I said no. I got some MAF cleaner and followed the directions on the can. It has been fine for a while now but I don't drive the truck that much. When you remove the MAF to clean it you should disconnect the battery. This should clear your codes as well.
thanks guys as soon as my brother gets his shop cleared outa bit , i'll jump back on to the issues. cant fit the 98 in there with a bronco 2 and a ranger geting an engine swap. i hope i can fix it cause i can't bring myslef to pay the $100 an hour shop rate at the dealership.
