I went to get my oil changed and they said my front axle was separating and on the verge of collapsing. I have known for some time that when I use four wheel drive, the passenger drive axle seal leaks quite a bit. I have just been filling the differential fluid when needed and it only leaks when in four wheel drive. It does not make any odd noises or vibrations. Does this sound realistic? If so, can you inform me as to what part(s) may need replacing? Thanks.
Are you saying the halfshaft is pulling out of the differential?
If I'm not mistaken, there should be a retaining circlip located on the end of the halfshaft which snaps into place inside the differential and holds it in place. Maybe the clip is broken or missing.
There seems to be about a 1+" gap between the halfshaft and the differential housing as shown in the picture. The halfshaft has a little wiggle room there. I am uncertain if this is normal. I don't believe I will attempt to desassemble the front axle myself, but I would like to get the seal fixed at that location. Thanks.
At anyrate, there's something that isn't right and needs to be addressed. Letting one problem go to long allways leads to other problems, like a wheel and axle flying off. That maybe a little dramatic, but you get the piture.
