Most likely the ignition module on the side of the distributor has gone dead. This is a very common problem on this vintage of Fords. You need a special tool to remove this, it is a skinny nosed socket of sorts, available at many auto parts stores.

It is probably the PIPS on the side of the distributor. The computer very rarely goes bad unless it was struck by lighting or water got into it.

they do make a special module tool, I've got one and it works nice, but a 1/4 drive socket will work..7/32 maybe, not sure on the size. You may have to turn the distributor to access the 2 bolts though

you didnt repaint the coil bracket or anything else (rust) that would prevent a ground? I've seen that before. a guy painted the bracketry and lost spark. He thought it was the coil then the distributer, wires, everything, ended up being the paint.

no paint, is there a way you can test that ICM or the PIPS(what does this stand for). and exactly where is the computer. i have has timing issues in the past, could the ICM be a cause for this too.

MOST sockets don't have a long enough skinny nose, atleast that has been my experience. With the proper tool, the distributor shouldn't need turned. However if you do have to turn the distributor, be sure to make reference marks so you can set it back close enough to start and time it later with a timing light.

the Ignition Module..one the distributor...take it off and take it to AutoZone...they will test it for free.

the tool IMO is a must...i tried like 10 dif brand sockets and none would fit...if you know of one that does let us know!

Yes, once you remove the ignition module many auto parts places can test it. An ignition module at Advance Auto Parts runs about $40 for a 6 cylinder, your V8 may be slightly higher. The PIP(profile ignition pickup) is inside the distributor, you have to remove and disassemble the distributor to replace this, but I would concentrate on the ignition module right now. The ICM should not cause timing issues. I would completely forget about the computer for right now.

Thats normal, lots of times it will restart when cold, but they wont run bad, they work or they dont

That's a very classic example of the ignition module going dead.

2 bolts recessed in horizontal holes on the side. It has terinals that go into the dist so when you get it unbolted pull straight down on it while rocking it slightly
