Water pump help!!

The bolts securing the pulley to the waterpump are only accessible with an open-end wrench. Of course, mine is not biting hard enough and is rounding off the bolt.
I can't get anything else on the bolts.

ANy suggestions? Can I get the waterpump out with the fan still attached and work
on it on the bench? I'm concerned about beating up my radiator fins.

My wrenches are Craftsman. Do I need a better wrench? Perhaps a 6 pt?

AHHHGGGGG I need good idea here!

if you can't get a 12pt. box end wrench on it, you won't be able to get a 6 pt. box end on it either.

I was thinking of a better fitting open end wrench... but I can't find one online.

Tried a line wrench too. Won't go on it.

Those would work if I could put a socket in that space... then again if I could use a socket the bolts would not be rounding!

I haven't done much damage yet. Just trying to find the right tool for the job. As soon
as the first wrench slipped I stopped in my tracks. I haven't hacked up the bolt heads yet...

You need to take the fan off first, this will solve all your problems.

Doesn't the pulley hold the fan? Or is the big nut on the fan shaft threaded
to the waterpump shaft?

The bolts (circled red) won't those release the fan and shaft?

or... does the shaft (circled blue) thread onto the waterpump?

Looks like somebody used an impact chisel to convince that shaft the last time!

Let's get some clarifications:

First, you ARE using metric wrenches, aren't you?

Second, (from what I can see) this IS a 7.3 diesel engine, right?

I may have missed something along this thread, but I can't find where you mentioned the engine. A lot of people come to this forum asking about other engines.

You need to unthread the fan ( blue circle).

Some folks use a impact hammer / chisel to break loose the nut, then it will unthread easily. The fan threads on to the water pump.

Next remove the bolts holding the pulley on.

BE SURE TO CHECK THE THREADS ON THE FAN,SOME ARE RIGHT HAND SOME ARE LEFT.IT MAY BE WRITTEN ON THE SHROUD.

By the looks of the chisel mark,it appears to be right hand thread.

The threads on the end of the water pump shaft are conventional, right-hand threads.

There is a kit you can usually rent at the parts house for getting this apart, and it will make it a lot easier.

Yes, I'm using metric. It is a 7.3L.

As long as I know the shaft is threaded I will go forward with the impact chisel... It's good to know beforehand! : )

don't have the spec's but I would think they would be enclosed with the new pump. At any rate I would not put a lot on them about 20-30 ft. lbs.
