Thumbs up Finally have heat :-)

Well, took my truck to the dealer the other day expecting to hear that the HG needed replacing and warranty expired. Got a call back 4 hrs later saying HGs are fine, heater core was plugged, flushed it and changed coolant. Boy is it ever nice to have heat in my truck again. Good news stories like this seem to be hard to come by so I thought I would share it.

Was it plugged with the dreaded casting sand? If so install a coolant filter. A flush will not get rid of all the casting sand.

its so good to hear good story's like this know-a-days. You should look into a coolant filter. I think I might too.

I think I will take all of your advise and look into a coolant filter. Any suggestions on brand and any prices available?

If you don't mind me asking, what symptoms or problems were you having when you took it in to get it checked out?

At first it seemed like it was losing coolant after I had the EGR cooler replaced. Now I am thinking it just may of had some air in the system cause only had to top it off once with about a gallon of antifreeze(50/50 premium gold). But the bigest problem was I had no heat what so ever. I thought maybe the water pump was bad but it never over heated at all. Then I thought thermostat but it got to operating temp in a reasonalble amout of time and stayed there. When I picked up truck at dealership, guy said when he drained coolant it was black, said it could have been from when egr cooler went and system was not properly flushed. He said the supply side of the heater hose was hot but the return line was cold, that was how he knew it was a blocked heater core. He back flushed the heater core and he described it as black gunk that was flushed from the core. Wheather it was sand or not I am not sure. Filled with water and ran engine. Drained again and it was orange. Flushed 2 more times to get water clear and filled with gold coolant. I would say the easiest test for a blocked heater core would be to check the heater hoses and if one is hot and one is cold, good chance it could be blocked. I think flushing is something you can do quite easily on your own, just need the special tool for diconnecting the coolant lines and replacement clips to reatach. Hope this help somebody out there espeacialy with these cold temps we are having l8ly.
