I have a F-150 5.4 and love it. It is getting older and thinking of replacing it. I have a travel trailer that it tows sufficiently. I would love to get a 2008 F-250PSD. The service manager and mechanic tell me don't touch diesel and stay with gas. Other forums praise the engine. Now that I am looking at what job# means, which job# is going to present me with the least amount of warranty work and trouble. I have been so happy with my F-150 that I am reluctant to go diesel, however it tows easier with diesel.
Thanks
Welcome to the FTE
Somebody will come along (soon) and answer your specific job# question... Perhaps you could elaborate on the size load you intend to pull? Most diesel owners (including me) will not recommend a gas engine for any serious pulling.
Good luck
If all the TSBs and recalls are done there shouldn't be much of a difference. The only thing I can think of is the bigger chin spoiler and the 3.55 rear end ratio starting with Job#2...July 07. These were done to help with mpgs. Other than those everything should be updated.
thanks for the replies. My travel trailer is 4300 dry. My F-150 is rated at 8400. I notice that it is gas on hills and mtns. Diesel is good about serious loads for sure. I have looked at what is around and a 3.55 might be hard to find in a new 08. Any ideas why the dealership is so negative?
I have had my 08 f250 since sept o8 and I have found that some service writers at the dealership are just not up to date with these trucks. The information you can attain just reading post's on this site arms you with the technical information you need to educate the service writer and to ensure your truck gets serviced correctly. I was told yesterday during an oil change that the only way you know if your truck is in regen is to watch for a large white cloud of smoke. also, i have only 5800 miles and service writer states that i will not see a regen until 8000 or 10,000 miles. unbelievable.
point is these trucks run excellent, you need to drill down with educated questions when you hear a service writer say these trucks are not a well built or well running vehicle. Wrong and Wrong.

Maybe your dealership is afraid they don't have techs to work on diesel. If you go diesel, you're going to need to have a dealership that is competent to work on it.
4300 would be a light load for a 6.4 diesel. I pull 15K+ w/mine. I have 4.30 gears and the Tow Boss package. 3.55 would certainly be sufficient for your load.
As to job number, mine's a Job 1. The only update it doesn't have is the deeper front air dam (chin spoiler). My dealership says that adds about 1 MPG.
With your light load, you may be just as happy with another gasoline engined vehicle.
The F150 w/3.73 gears will get you up to 9500lbs, the 5.4 F250 w/4.10 gears will get you up to 11,200lbs, the 6.8 w/4.10 gears is 12,500 (same as a the 6.4 w/3.55 or 3.73 gears. The F250's weigh a lot more then the F150's. The diesels w/auto are a 7-8k option over gas, diesel is more expensive to buy ($3 a gallon), and more $'s for maintenance. The F350 6.8 dually at work gets about 9 mph and my F350 6.4 dually gets about 12mpg. My old F150 with the tow package, 5.4 & 3.73 gears got 16 mpg. If it was me, I'd stick to a F150 (maybe get the w/3.73 gears) unless your going to do some serious upgrading camper in the near future.

The 3.55s are standard equipment now on the 08s unless you get the 20 inch wheels.
I have the job 3 6.4 with 3.73 LS. Based uppon what your indicating like others I beleive I would just go with a updated F150 with 3.73 gears in it. I think you will be just as happy.
I pull around 8K and alot of times around 10K plus 2-3K in the bed so a F250 for me. So that is what you need to look at.
I might consider a PSD even with the lighter load if you will be doing a lot of cross country/long hauls.
For the weight you are pulling I would stick to the F150. Initial cost is cheaper, less maintenance than a diesel, and better MPG if you drive it daily. Dont go overkill on a truck to tow with on a limited basis. If you tow a lot or plan to tow heavier then I say go for the 250/350. As well as more power you also get more weight (better stability), bigger brakes, heavier frame and suspension, etc.
V10 vs 6.4 also depends on towing needs. More maintenance with a diesel, $7,000 increase in price, fuel is more than gas, and diesel trucks require extra work such as plugging them in when it gets cold, running additive in your fuel, being careful with your idling time, etc. But the first time you hit a hill with 10k or more behind you all the work of a diesel pays off.
Jasontrucks76, check out the tech info at the top of the 6.4 forum. The great folks of FTE just added a thread that discusses some of the changes from Job #1-2-3 and it also includes the dates of each job # to determine which job your truck is.

I added the airdam to my job 1 450 and haven't seen a difference in mileage.
I just bought a job one, and had all updates done to it, it runs excellant and I am loving this truck it is sweet! Had its first regen today, that was a little interesting, I think that will be going bye bye lol. I think the car behind me was getting pissed.
