Basically you have to remove the entire column/box from the truck to clean the internals out. It's almost a rebuild once you get all the parts out of it. Once they are all out wipe it down and pack it full again. A high temp grease is better since it sits right next to the manifold or header. Speaking of which I should do mine. Thanks for the reminder.
the shop manual calls for hypoid gear oil...aka rear end lube for the manual steering box.

Are you sure Don my original was full of grease but a little runny I wonder if it had been mixed or if just very old? It does kinda have that rear end smell about it. Wonder if that is why the bearings failed.

90wt hypoid gear oil is correct.
It's prolly solidified by now, cuz it hasn't been changed since grandma was a girl.
The bearings failed because the gearbox is 44 years old. Nothing lasts forever.
I'm surprised they lasted this long.
Usually by the time one a these gearboxes is 5 years old, it's time for a rebuild.
