Ignition question

I just finished rebuilding the engine in my '95 Escort and I'm ready to turn it over. What is the safest way to crank the starter without adding spark? I want to be sure my oil pressure is up before it starts running. How do you "turn off" the distributorless ignition on a Ford?

There should be a couple of modular connectors on the EDIS unit. I'm not sure where it is on an Escort, but on the Aerostar, it's on the inside fender wall on the passenger side. One of these connects to the coil pack. The other comes from the EEC; you should disconnect this one.

You should also disable the fuel pump so the injectors don't squirt fuel into the cylinders.

You can make the engine turn much easier, with less load on the bearings, if you also removed the spark plugs during this priming.

Easy way on Escort, pull plug wires and trip the fuel pump emergency shut off switch. You can crank away with no fuel injection or spark (to plugs).
