Got a buddy with a 7.3idi motor ('87) that has a knock. He called me up and I went and took a look at it. I couldn't be sure as to what the knock is from. However when they crack the injector line at the 1st cylinder the knock goes away. Now when you tighten the 1st cylinder line down again and break open another line the knock is still there. This happens on all the cylinders except the 1st and the 8th. I dont know much about the truck other then it is a reman ford motor that they picked up off another guy to throw in their roll-off. Its got all new injectors in it and the motor itself has been sitting for awhile. Any help or diagnosis would be greatly appreciated!
Not that it matters but the motor will not be `87, they were 6.9.
However it sounds to me like you have two bad injectors. Just my opinion, maybe some of the IDI experts will chime in soon. Good luck.
Also, they are saying they replaced those 2 injectors with new units and the problem is still there and they're saying as well that the problem starts to occur as the motor warms up. Thanks for all your help!
kind of sounds like piston slap, wrist pin problems or rod knock. If they have already replaced those two and that didn't make it sound different it might be time to dive in deeper.
My truck is actually starting to do the same thing and this motor has just a little over 100,000 but it is obvious that the injectors are originals so looks like I will be in for a set of new injectors soon as well.
It doesn't do it at while cold but as it warms up it starts to have sort of a miss/knock to it. The only other thing that sounded like it could have been was valve guides going bad that I have read about.
