Headers and a Y pipe
1) Is it a Good Thing?
2) What kind? (Brand)
3) Is it just a matter of bolting it up? (ha)
The only thing left some-what stock on the exhaust is the "y" pipe.
4) Does Summit sell an aftermarket Y pipe, or should I go down to the local Muffler shop and have one made?
Thanks for taking the time to help me.
Paul
There are many different kinds of headers. I would suggest getting shorty style headers that are ceramic coated. They seem to hold the heat in best and last the longest. And are the closest to true bolt on. Full length headers are a pain. Summit sells a couple of brands of shorty style headers.
Shorty headers should bolt right up to your stock exhaust. No need to replace the y-pipe....unless you are planning to do true duals. The only thing that I had a little trouble with is the smog stuff that bolts to one bolt of the manifold on the passenger side and the support bracket for the upper intake manifold. You will need to rig something up in order to hold the smog stuff up and off of those headers, otherwise there will be the smell of burning plastic and rubber. I got tired of trying to rig smoething up with the smog stuff, so I ripped it all out. I would suggest keeping it if you live in an area that does emissions testing.
If you would rather put a stock manifold back on it, I have a pair of stock manifolds off of a 1995 F150 w/351 that I currently use as doorstops. There is nothing wrong with them. I just like my headers better. Make sure you get headers that are correct for your year and make. The EGR valve is bolted to the end of your exhaust manifold on the passenger side and you will need the EGR valve with or without your other smog equipment.
