Trouble starting

I am having trouble getting my 6.9L 1987 diesel started. When I turn the key to the run position the wait to start light goes on and off after about 2 seconds whether the truck is plugged in or not I am hearing clicking from what I had thought to be the relay and still think it is that. about 1 click per second. I go to crank the engine and nothing even after 30-45 seconds of cranking. I can however get the engine started with starting fluid.

You have some glowplugs burned out. I recommend you go ahead and replace them all with Motorcrafts, Do NOT use anything but motorcrafts, or else they will burn out in just a few weeks of use.

dcwpainting,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.

The Motorcraft plugs are Beru plugs, made in Germany.

Never seen one swell.

Can't count the posts here about how to get swollen Autolite and Champion glow plugs out of the head when they break off because they swelled up when they blew.

Wellmans and AC Delco are in the Autolite/Champion class as well.

Someone posted something about Bosch, can't remember what they said though.

Use an automotive test light, clip the ground clip to a positive battery terminal.
Remove the wire from the glow plug and touch the testor tip to the glow plug connector.
If the light lights, the glow plug is probably good.
If it does not, the plug is burnt out.

Do watch and only touch the connector, not far to the metal housing which is grounded to the block.

Because they must not be held to ANY quality standards at all. When I bought my 93, the GP's were working fine. Within a week, I had lost 3 of them. When I pulled the first one out, I saw the name Autolite..... Needless to say, it got 8 new Motorcraft/Beru's!!!! Been working great, for over 4 months now!

P.S. Welcome to FTE!

Mine are all three years old, they all still work just like they did when I installed them.
