Speeding school bus

I live on the main road in and out of the neighborhood 4th house in . the school bus speeds in every day well over the 20 mph speed limit. on Friday girlfriend and kids where walking back from the lake and the bus almost hit my son after toping a small hill.

This is pissing me off! Every one speeds past the house at all hours of the day and night some as fast as 60 to 70 mph. law enforcement is all most nonexistent as we live 15 miles down a dead end road. I tired calling the school but have not got any where yet.

For the school bus, you probably need to contact the bus garage. They're usually separate from the school itself. Other vehicles -- good luck.

It's amazing that there aren't more problems -- I don't think that school bus drivers get paid very well.

We've had similar problems being out off the main road a ways. We've had good luck with organic speed bumps, other wise known as grab about a two inch thick branch and lay it in the road. We were sitting in the yard once when this guy who's girlfriend lives up the road goes by fast - twice. Out came the organic speed bump. Next time he come flying by he slams on the brakes - and darned if doesn't stop, get out and move it to the side of the road - *then* smoke the tires and speed off! I went and put the "bump" back in the road. He comes by again and see it, slams on the brakes again. This time he left it - but he got the message!

That may or may not be the case but I bet many of them either need the job or the insurance that goes with it. I'd start by having a quick conversation with the driver. If he is non-responsive, maybe take some video of him driving like that and let him know you will be forwarding it to his boss.

You may also want to let some of the parents know how he is driving with their kids on the bus.

I straightened out the busdriver on my kid's route with just one conversation.
Worth a try....

...toss a box of nails out in the road a ways down from your house, I'm betting everyone will start taking an alternate route.

There are several ways to slow the bus down. A call to a school board member should do it after you document that you have tried to deal with it by calling the bus drivers boss. If that doesnt work contact the schools PTA and inform them of the dangerious speeding that COULD KILL A CHILD and I 100% promise you that driver will slow down or be fired. Upset parents when they have a just cause can get more done than anyone. I warned our local school board about drug abuse by school bus drivers. I told then kids could die if it wasnt stoped. Two years later a crash killed 3 kids and the driver( who was at fault) was tested and found to be high on pot.( she even had some in her pocket) Now we have a very strick random drug testing program and any violation will result in a quick termination. I know they remembered me and my statement then........but it was too late.

Get ahold of a school board member, the Director of Transportation of the school district, or just stop the bus and tell the driver that if it continues you will lodge a formal complaint. And, if none of these work, contact your local TV station and ask to have a reporter and film crew at your home when the bus passes. They love this kind of stuff......

Contact these people (in this order):

Superintendent of Schools
Vice-Superintendent of Schools
Board of Education - Transportation Supervisor
Bus Contractor (If buses are not county owned/operated.)
Principal(s) of school(s)
Local Police
Local Newspaper(s)

Take photographs of the bus and if you can, the bus driver.

One of the local school's bus stopped in my side yard EVERY day, after dropping off kids, and she would sit there and smoke a cigarette and drink a soft drink, taking a break, without fail.
I called all of the above.
It stopped. . . for about a week.

When it started again, I walked outside and politely asked the lady for her name.

"Huh?"

I asked her again, for her name.

When she told me, I said, "Mrs. ______________, I will have a repair quote prepared for you, tomorrow.
You WILL pay to have my lawn repaired where you've parked that (ahem) bus on my property all year long, and taking your smoke breaks.
Now, get the (ahem) bus off my property!"

She has never stopped beside my house, again!

I can answer this question if you really want the answer. Many studies have shown than the seat belts increase the over all risk to children on school buses. The interior design with pading on THE BACK OF THE SEATS protect in almost all of the low speed accidents. This is why school buses are not suppose to speed. 45 mph is the max alowed other than activity buses approved for interstate use. School buses have federal safety standards not found on SUVs and cars. This is one of the reasons they sit so high. It lets a speeding car go under it(often killing the people in the car) but keeping the kids above the impact zone protecting them.
