As long as your son feels he has a choice in the matter, he's in control of the situation. As the parent, you make the choices for him, and are in control. By doing what you're doing right here, you're showing him you don't have the authority to make him do his homework, and have to turn to the internet to get someone else to convince him. Not sure if that's the advice you're wanting, but it's how I see it. All the best.

I used to never to my homework, which upset my teachers very much so, because I am extremely smart (I'm not just blowin my own horn, I had a 6th grade reading level in the 1st grade, and blew the top off of all the test I ever got), but I never ever did my homework, but something happened from during the summer, still not sure yet, but I know tend to all of my business and get my homework done and my grades have drastically improved, from low A's to all 99's and 100's. and that includes my calculous, trig, and Physics classes.

So, I guess my thing is don't push to hard, cuz my parents used to be all over my case, but they quit during my Junior year, and now I magically get most of my stuff tended to.

I guess if your wanting to show him something from your buddies online, this is all I have to say is that looking back I really wished I would have applied myself fully because I feel I could be so much farther if I would have applied myself, instead of doing what was just necessary to get just good grades to keep my parents happy.

Best hit the books son, or you'll end up spelling like your Pa.

I've got the ultimate words of encouragement,

You better get your homework done, or else you'll be getting a Cheby minivan for your first vehicle.

Sadly, my Dad tried that on me, but it didn't work, I told him I would rather work with my hands than my head, I liked being able to stand back and see the fruits of my labor, while with homework and school I never got any satisfaction from it, except for test, cuz I can beat just about anyone on anytest without studying, but grades were just numbers that meant nothing. But now that I'm a senior, and in much harder classes, heck its not uncommon for 1 calculous problem to take an entire sheet of paper front and back, I feel accomplishment for finishing my work and getting good grades.

How old is your kid?

Anyway, one day I decided to not do my homework. Who gets called on? Yep. Me. And the teacher knew. So guess who got to stay after school, to do the homework I didn't do the night before, but ALSO the homework I got that day. And coming home late from school got me into trouble at home too.

Doing your homework is preparing you for the next day. Put your head down, put your pen to paper and do it.

I make sure my daughter does her homework away from the TV or any other distractions, usually at the kitchen table. Worked with my son as well. Further reinforcement can be achieved by duct taping or tie wraps to keep child stationary in chair at homework station. My kids have accused me of running a "Gitmo homework camp", but my wife drew the line at blasting AC/DC music at them as a form of breaking their spirit!

I'll throw in my $.02. But, advice is usually worth what you pay for it.

I was reasonably smart, and somewhat lazy (still am somewhat lazy and I'm 62!). More than once got passed up at school and work by less gifted folks who just plain worked harder.

That's my contribution to motivation. As far as what you might do about it, our deal alway was -- you always have to love your kids, but they can't always be your friends. So, sometimes we had some creative punishments that our kids really didn't like. ( I have to credit my wife for these )

1. Removed everything from my son's room -- it was the only time that grounding actually bothered him.

2. Made them go everywhere with us -- and they went nowhere without us -- except to school. This takes some real commitment. Actually brought us closer together as a family.

3. Set aside the time right after school as homework time

Did we do everything right? I don't know. I'm proud of my kids, but they might have been fine anyway. But those were some of the things that we did to jeep their attention. We also had family meetings when they were in their teens. We'd sit down once a week or so -- often we complained to them about various things -- but we tried to listen as well.

You never did say how old your son is -- but I suspect he's a teen. If he's an older teen, you might take a different approach. My brother in law dropped out at 16, got his GED and went to votech to be a mechanic ( couldn't go until he was 18). He's done fine, but he did work really hard once he got into the votech.

Anyway, just some thoughts -- as I said, they're worth whatever you paid for them.

Talking

Tell him that if he gets a bad grade because he wont do his homework he will be punished. Take away his cell phone for a week.

Schools do not teach very much in class nowadays. They want the student to do homework where they are exposed to the material. Then they review and reinforce what was studied. The major focus of schools today is the mandated testing upon which they are judged my the government.
