Hi guys, I'm new to this site and am really enjoying it! Great knowlege base. I do have a problem I'm trying to figure out though. I recently bought a 97 4x4, F350 with a 5 speed. I do a lot of trailer pulling, often in rough and steep areas. The problem I'm having is when I am acellerating in low gears, especially low range. I engage the clutch, that is smooth and fine, but when I try to speed up some, either forward or in reverse it is nearly imposible to do without it beeing very jerky. The throttle is just too sensitive. It is a real pain when pulling horses etc. Has anyone experienced this or know of a way to fix it? Thank you very much for any help. Joe
It is actually worse in 1st gear. If you engage the clutch and let move at an idle it is fine but of course very slow. When you try to give it fuel to speed up or climb a hill it is ipossible to do smoothly. It is bad enough to bounce your horses around in the trailer or jerk the heck out of whatever you're hauling. You need to test the TPS ,,(Throttle Position Sensor)
You need to put a voltmeter across the GY/W and the GY/R wires on the connector to the TPS. With the key on, watch the voltage across the range of the throttle to see if there is any flat spots. You should see no less than .37 volts at idle position and no more than 4.5 volts at full throttle. The the third wire, (BRN/W), is the ref. voltage and should be 5 volts all the time.
i find i need a lot less throttle from stop than i first thought when i started driving the truck (even with a load). in 1st gear, i pretty much let the clutch out with no throttle- never stalls, and never bucks. i think the bucking i experienced before was the same kind of thing as bump-firing a semi-auto rifle.
