HI FTE. I AM NEW TO THIS FORUM. I HAVE A 99 F-350 4X4 FOUR DOOR LONG BED. WHENEVER I TAKE OFF FROM A COMPLETE STOP, I FEEL A DOUBLE CLUNK THAT SEEMS TO BE COMING FROM MY DRIVELINE. I JUST RECENTLY HAD A NEW TRANS PUT IN AS WELL AS THE CARRIER BEARING WAS REPLACED. MY U-JOINTS DONT SEEM TO HAVE ANY PLAY IN THEM. I HAD THIS PROBLEM BEFORE THE TRANS AND THE CARRIER BEARING WAS REPLACE. IT SEEMED TO HAVE GONE AWAY IMMEDIATLY AFTER BUT CAME BACK ABOUT A WEEK LATER. ANY SUGGESTIONS? THANKS -SAL
Does it happen EVERY time you take off or is it more pronounced under heavy acceleration take offs?
If it is more pronounced under heavy acceleration take offs, I would check motor and transmission mounts. I have not had a problem with my Ford Truck but, I have had that problem in the past. It might be hard to identify at first but, if you look at them really well with a strong flashlight you should be able to see if one of them is broken.
It Makes The Clunk Sound Under Normal Acceleration . Sometimes You Can Also Hear It When Coming To A Complete Stop. I Will Try That Slip Joint Regreasing. I Think That Will Take Care Of The Problem. Thanks For Your Help Guys.
Thanks. Thats correct. The clunk gets really annoying after a while. Especially because the truck is a daily driver and i drive about 60 miles a day. With traffic, about 3 hrs total. California traffic. Lol
Tell me about it, I dont miss it one bit lol. California traffic, i couldn't deal with cali emission laws and all that crap... you are a better person than me lol
Let us know if the Slip Joint works. It'll be good for future reference when people run a search in the forum
On the outside chance that it's not the slip joint, there is a possibility that it is the front sway bar mounts. They will also clunk and you can usually feel it in your feet.
Welcome to FTE. Another thing that has been a problem is the midship bearing can have too much angle on the drive shaft. Ford had a letter out that stated if the truck is driven empty most of the time that the bearing support can be lowered by as much as 3/4 of and inch. This was more for the shudder or growl on take off. Lee

Had the same problem. Greased the slip yoke. Problem solved.
If this does cure your problem (99% sure it will), mark your calendar to do it once a year. I'm just past my year point and my clunk-clunk is back. It's always a good excuse to get ouside and enjoy the great SoCal weather (talk about a heat wave right now, 85F yesterday in San Diego!) and give the underside a good look to make sure everything's okay too.
