I had two put in my 2001 Superduty before I traded it in. One had a chip until my wife pressed on it with her finger and it cracked. Then the second one was a week later and the insurance company thought I was pulling something over on them with it being so close together. I bought my 2005 new and it still has the original, no cracks or chips. I think it could be the area you live in, around dirt roads, vehicles that travel on the roads, etc.
I have a 1" crack on my windshield from spraying down my truck with water on a really hot August day... I didn't even notice the crack until after I finished washing the truck and started cleaning the windows.
How effective is the repair method like the one offered by Safelite Auto Glass?
I was told by a glass guy that once the glass has cracked more than 1/2" you can forget about trying to repair it. I have seen the repairs done to chips, nicks, scratches and tiny cracks in windshields and you cannot believe how well it looks. If you didnt know it was there, you will never find it.

Thanks for the infomation... I think that I'll try thr repair first and if it doesn't last, then I'll replace the winshield.
If I make three trips to PA in a year, during the winter, I can expect to get a new windshield. I changed my insurance in GA to -0- deductible on my comprehensive. 1/2 windshield pays the additional cost.
PA uses a mixture of salt and stone for highways, called anti skid. They are not allowed to use ashes as was the case years ago. ASHES break up. BLUE ROCK breaks windshields.
For me, the solution was simple, buy the additional insurance.
Nope. I am pretty sure it came out on the 04's. None of the local windshield places in my area list it for the 03's. It will cost me about $75.00 above my deductable to put one in.
Wierd, Maybe it's only in the later 03's? Both mine and my friend's 03's have the Super Duty across the windshield. A tree fell on my truck last night shattering my windshield. I better not have any problems replacing it with a SuperDuty one.
I live on a gravel road and haven't had any problems with rock chips, even driving 10+ miles every day on gravel. I wasn't so lucky during a hailstorm last June though, It spider webbed it good. My insurance has free windshield replacement so it didn't cost me anything. I did have to specify that I wanted an OEM Ford windsheild with the superduty on the new one otherwise they would of just put in a regular one. btw, my '04 came from the factory with the super duty logo.
