I am new to this and I am learning as I go. I have a 97 Extended Cab with the 4.6L and what I need to know is if the exhaust for a 98-03 would work. I am looking at a Lightning look-a-like or one with the exit at the rear of the tire instead the fron like the original 97 was. Any comments on this would surely help.
You want take the stock exhaust off a 98-03 Lightning? If you want to go behind the rear tire, you would need to purchase a cat-back or have one custom made.
Sorry, I wasn't too clear. I bought the truck used and the person who had it, put a turn down on it and some nasty sounding muffler that is bugging me. What I am doing is looking at Bassani or Magnaflow or others and see what they have for my truck. I would like, if possible, put a Lighting look-a-like (dual pipes) which exits in front of the rear tire. But if I could, I wouldn't mind a single outlet but past the rear tire like the newer trucks. I think Ford began to put all the exhaust past the rear tire in 98 but I am not sure. What I like to know is if the exhaust from a later year truck (98-03) would fit the 97. also, what are the most widely used exhaust (stailess steel) for that year (97). Oh, I almost forgot, it is a 4.6L extended cab XLT. I hope this helps.
If your looking for a mellow slightly louder than stock system a lightning style exhaust exiting in front of the RR wheel is not for you. A short exhaust like that will be fairly loud and allow harsh tones to come through and will be loud in the cab. I used to have a lightning style exhaust on my truck.
Your truck should have come with a stainless exhaust system from factory. An aluminized system will last a long time if you don't live in a harsh winter enviroment and don't do loads of short trips where the engine doesn't reach temp.
