I need to put cats back on my true dual.the smell is awful! Would putting a 3 inch cat on a 2 1/2 inch system promote more flow? Or should i just stick with the 2 1/2 inch?
Any cat will make the exhaust a bit quieter than no cat, but from personal experience it'll still be pretty loud.. much more than it is with the stock cats.
Between the 2.5" and 3" I don't think you'll see a whole lot of difference in loudness. Yes the 3" will be a tad louder, but I think it would be hard to tell.
The cross section of the catalyst itself would be more of concern to me. There are only two ways to get more flow out of a cat. The first is to increase the cross section. W use this method a lot on trucks since the large casing also helps reduce raspiness and causes a deeper tone shift. The second is to use a lower cell density catalyst. This method works well, but the cost of the catalyst is much higher, and this option should only be used if smog legal racing is your thing.
