2000 f250, 230000 miles. just recently aquired. first time diesel owner. starts rough in cold weather, but will run for about 30-45 seconds and then shuts down. have to restart 2-5 times before will idle up without shutting down. after warm up runs just fine. also temp gauge runs just in the bottom of normal, just above the cold mark, is that normal or is something wrong with thermostat. Have changed oil, fuel filter, and air filter, ne help would be great thx.
Welcome to FTE. Not sure why it would run for a while then shut off. Others can be of more help there. The guage sounds normal. Just a glorified idiot light.
Welcome to FTE. When it first starts up does the idle romp up and down then die? Does it act like it runs out of fuel, or like someone turned the key off? Does the check engine light come on? How cold is it where you're at? Does it only do it when cold, or will it do the same thing if you start it after the truck has been warmed up? What brand & weight oil did you use and how much did you put in?

Do you get the romps (idles up and down and engine not smooth)? Mine would romp and die once or twice when I first started it. I switched oil to rotella 5w40 synthetic and it cured the problem. I've heard it can also could be your IPR valve which controls pressure in the hp oil system.
only when cold (here is 25 to 35 f) no check engine light. runs rough till warm. shakes but not real violent, kind of acts like the key just turned off. used rotella cant recall weight. but it does romp. but only when cold.
thx
I didnt change oil myself, but my dad has a 99, and the first thing he said was to make sure to recheck the stick after running and oil level is good. and i check about everyother day.
Sounds good, just checking. As I'm sure you've been told, the oil is very important to these trucks.
Why don't you try plugging the truck in tonight and see if that makes a difference. If you've got a good timer, set the timer to come on about 2 hours before you plan on leaving.
ok will do, if that helps the problem would that point to plugs. i dont know alot about maitnence on diesel motors, but i drive a big truck for a living, just curious
thx
Probably not. If it were plugs you'd be seeing a lot of white smoke at start up, and it's not quite cold enough for that to be a big issue. If the truck runs better with the engine a little warmer at start up, the investment in synthetic oil would be a good idea.
thx alot will try that first. i didnt think plugs, but have had people tell me that, just didnt make sense why it ran fine after warm up in these temps. cold for us here in the south but still not real cold. once again thx alot
