Do I need an X/H pipe?

I have A1973 F-100 with a 302 in her. I just took off the stock single exhaust and put in a dual pipe setup I pulled out of a 1974 parts truck that had a 351 in her that was no good.

The parts truck did not have a crossover pipe of any type in it so I didn't put one in mine. my truck ran ok before this and a few other modifications, but now she won't crank.

Could the lack of a crossover pipe be causing my starting problems? She turns over fine but is a bear to actually get started and then she runs rough as heck until she finally chokes out. I have also replaced the Distributor cap, wires and plugs in addition to putting some chrome valve covers on her. I cleaned out the exhaust manifolds and put them on with new gaskets because she wouldn't pass vehicle inspection here in NC.

Any ideas?

The lack of a crossover or H pipe is not your problem. The H pipe just balances out the exhaust pulses, and in most cases improves low end torque.

Did you replace the distributor cap, and wires before this problem occured or did you replace them to try to remedy the problem. If it ran OK before you replaced these items maybe you got some wires on the wrong cylinder.

It was running rough before I replaced the cap and wires so I did them as a possible solution.

I have the wires on the cap and plugs according to the haynes manual diagram for the 302 firing order and cap order.

I also rebuilt the Carb today but haven't had a chance to fire her up yet due to running the battery down in my attempts to crank her.

I did discover that she still has the original carb on her though with a date code of 8/1/72!

Yeah like he said the crossover pipe isn't your problem. I know this sounds dumb, but are sure there's nothing stuck in the exhaust pipes? Hey, it is an old parts truck that's been sitting, maybe there's something stuck in there. And THAT would definetly be a problem. As far as the h pipe goes, having one is a great idea, there isn't a downside. It improves power and sound.

Pretty sure there's nothing in the pipes. When she does crank up I have to give her a lot of gas to stay running. she leaves two black circles on the ground from the downward pointing tips under the truck.

Also she blows a LOT of black smoke when running and I think a little bit of white smoke mixed in as well.

I know black usually means fuel, blue/gray means oil and white means water.

I do have a water pump leak that I am remedying with a new water pump tomorrow hopefully.

Oh you know what that is? That's you running way rich. I had that exact problem on my '72. What I did was, screw your jets in all the way, then unscrew each one 2.5 turns. That should get your engine to were it can at least idle. Then just play with the jets and idle until it's were you want it to be. Then spend a little money and have a carb guy dial it in. It's the way to go.
