it is on the intake side, u take all of the stock air intake out look at the compressor housing inlet you should see a ring there, pop it out i think its called a inducer ring or bleed ring something like that, you have 2 parts of the turbo compressor wheel the inducer the smaller part of the wheel and the exducer the larger base of the turbo compressor wheel, by removing the silencer ring it may let the exducer part of the turbo wheel grab and push more airflow which may make the engine breath better through the entire rpm range. the 04-07 turbos need to have the ring machined out to fix this while the 03's should simply pop the silencer ring out that is all. below is a photo and a link to what i am talking about. hope this helps you out.
check this link out, it has a pic of the early 03 turbos with a complete breakdown of the turbo charger and the inducer ring that can be popped or removed out of it.

You da man! Thank you for the details!! I have a 1/23/2004 build so I probably don't have the ring I can just pop out... but I will check this weekend.
I'm a little confused...there are a couple of post in this thread that say the ring is removable on the '04 (as well as the '03). There is a couple of other posts that say only the '03 are removable and all other year models have to be machined out. I have a '04, built Sept. '03 if that helps.

Let me know if it does pop out, mine is an early 04 build as well. I am not going to have it machined out though. Thanks.
is there any way to see what year a turbo is? (ie tag, markings, design, etc.) I got my turbo replaced last year (turbo was pulled out of another 6.0) but i'm not sure what year the turbo is. i would love to remove the ring if this option is available. Thank you!
While doing a routine servicing I decided to dive into my intake to find out. For the record my '04 doesn't have the removal-able ring; it would have to be machined out. I don't plan on going though the effort of removing my turbo just to have the ring machined out. Now if the turbo just happens to be off the motor because of the installation of headstuds...
I dove in to mine today. not that big of deal to get to but when I got there I found what looked like a machined piece of aluminum not shur if that was it are not was scared to pry on it untill i make for shur that is it are not would really like to have a pic. of one. it looked like a reducer to me . My truck ia 03 6.0

Well I reached in there and touched the "ring" but it was still quite hot!! lol. It didn't seem like something that would just pull out. It is thin metal... tin snips!! Just kidding!
