2001 dually, starving for fuel......Ok two questions....any advice on getting the fuel pump cleaned and out to test it. and # 2. any advice on draining a full fuel tank so I can remove it?
you can disconnect the line at the pump to drain the fuel. If the existing pump is ok, you can jump 12v to it and use it to pump out the tank. Otherwise, use another or gravity.
You can kill two birds with one stone; disconnect the fuel line from the pump outlet, stick a length of hose to the end of the pump and then hook a battery to the power posts of the pump.
It provides the double opportunity of draining the tank into some totes and also a way to measure fuel volume. That would help to eliminate any doubt on whether the pump inlet screen is clogged or not.
I doubt your pump is bad, they have a screen on the inside that will pretty quickly get clogged if you don't have a pre-filter. (personal experience talking here.)
I don't know of a good way to clean it out either. You will always get most of it, but the little tiny particles that get embedded in the screen and really clog it up usually stay behind.
