Bad COP miss?

Once a month over last few months it seems, I get a mis that lasts a few days. SAve you the long version, I have not been able todetermine any thing that could cause this, ie temp moisture fuel level.

So it developes a miss some slight some times a little rough. I can always excel and it will go away. Mostly it happens at 55. Cold or warm no differance. Yesterday i drove 50 miles it never did it after the first 20, even after cooling off and restarting.

I pulled batt cable, because i thought that was somethign i did last time, but did not fix it today, will have to wait over the next day to see what happens. Last month it only acted up 2 days.

Just about the time i was going to swap a cop, it stoppped. So i am afraid if i replace one, i will not knwo if it is fixed or not, that is why i am awaiting unitl it is a solid miss, and asking if the symps fit your bad cop problem.

Also my oil leak is getting worse, still appears to be rear main, but my be the cover around the seal, but geting the burnt oil smell all the time now. Just a drop often enough to kep it stinkin.

It sounds like you have a bad boot or boots and you are only getting a problem when it's damp or when condensation has formed in the holes.

I will try to keep an update.

I do park in Garage, in KY, drive 10 miles one way, goto work and back twice a day.

This morning no miss going or returning. heavy frost, but dry morning.

You have a COP that is going to give out soon. Wait for a solid miss and a Check Engine light. Run the scanner and it will tell you which cylinder is misfiring. If no Check engine light comes on and you are still getting a miss, i would suggest changing the boots as rvpuller suggestions. Hope this helps.

I assume since you both mentioned it, that I can just get boots for local NAPA? Been a mech my whole life, but never had to wok on an engine like this.

Thanks, and I make a short little run around normal folks lunch less then 1 mile each way, no miss. Will see what next run to work brings this afternoon.

It's going to be COP. It will crap out on you soon. If it were the boots you'd have a constant misfire with no codes. Since you mentioned short little runs with no miss, i'm led to believe on COP will crap out sooner or later. Don't spend any money on boots just yet.

How many miles on the truck?

no miss 7 miles, none 8 miles, none on 30 mile trip to autoparts late for sons explorer, so your right. I think I will just get plugs for now, until the miss settles in solid, or i find bad boots, doing plug change.

It's a COP. I've had 3 go over the past 4 years of ownership. I have never had the check engine light come on, but the code scanner has always immediately pointed out the bad COP anyways, don't wait to change the COP or you will foul your plug in that cylinder. I left my first one too long before I replaced it and the plug also needed replacing. The last two I replaced right away and never had to change the plugs. If you plan on keeping the truck for a few years buy a code scanner. There available at most auto parts store for less than 100 bucks for basic scanners. It takes all of 5 mins to read the codes and find the bad COP, sure saves alot of time rather than doing the trial and error elimination test to find the bad COP.

Here is something to think about, if you buy a a new coil it comes with new boot so how do you know if it was a bad boot or coil if you install both at one time

well miss has not return yet. I am getting no lights. Will a bad cop throw a code with no light? Curious. I cant see holding off on plugs, they are not that much money, what could it hurt, like replacing filter early?
