Transfer Case Replacement
I had my 90,000 mile fluid replacement and maintenance done for my 03 Ford F-150 FX4. I recently spent a weekend up in the mountains of Durango enjoying some snowboarding. The weather was crap on the way home and it was 4X driving the entire way back to Albuquerque. When I got home, I noticed some whining at all speeds, but most notable while decelereating from 70mph. The Ford house here in Albuquerque found the noise in my transfer case. Replaced the fluid and noticed the fluid was burnt. They said I have some bearings going out in the transfer case and recommended I replace the whole thing. I understand they dont do intrusive maintenance like this, but I was wondering if anyone out there has had a similar experience. Is it more cost effective to have the TX Case replaced, or have an overhaul done?
On a side note, I have had my slip yoke tightened, cleaned, and re-lubed numerous times. By numerous times I mean, any time I drive through water I get the inevitable clunk in the rear end. Could this have any relation to the above mentioned bearing degradation? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Chris
