Not real sure about this but, my bronc seems to be idling high and a little sporadic at times, i would say 1000 to 1100 rpm, sometimes when its in gear and moving slowly, it kinda jumps idle, i would say 1200 to 1700 then back down rather quickly. could this be tied into an issue with the torque converter or is it a plain sensor problem like maybe in the intake? 86 bronc2 4x4 2.9 eddie bauer,
Could be a matter of the idle stop being a little off in adjustment or could be more related to the IAC, throttle body, and intake needing a bit of cleaning. I had a similar issue (mine is a 5-speed) and ended up tinkering with the idle stop and it settled out. Check your throttle cable for issues, too. I don't know of any sensors that may cause this - you may also want to check your fuel pressure regulator for gas in the vacuum line, check your distributor to see if it's loose, etc. There are several possibilities, I would do a general check of everything. If you can pull codes, check that out as well. Is this with the A/C on? Could be related to that as well. Hope this helps some.
ok pulled the codes today as best i could. engine off codes were 31 13, engine running codes were 21 41 31 77 25 74. ok i did not know exactly what i was doing so i did not get to do the goose test, and i did not know when to touch the brakes. i have done a little research around the web and found out my problem may lie in the emissions control system. at highway speeds its kinda dead feelin, the tranny wont shift right at highway speeds, and it idles funny sometimes, im guessing this all has to do with the egr not acting right. how do i find out whether its the solenoid, the egr or something else in the system?
I would start with your CM codes (31, 13) first and getting them resolved. More often than not, EGR-related issues is due to a gunked up EGR valve and cleaning it up will get rid of the issue, but sometimes you wind up replacing the valve. 31 is usually an O2 sensor problem, usually requires replacement. 13 is your IAC/ISC (idle control), which can be cleaned up and re-checked, but might need replacement if cleaning it up doesn't do the trick. 21 is the ECT sensor - could be dirty, could be going bad and need replacement. 41 means it's running lean (possibly due to the O2 sensor / other codes), I would change the O2 sensor out / check the connections. 25 - knock sensor not tested (not sure what the heck is the problem there?). 74 & 77 are operator error codes (hit brake, turn steering wheel, WOT) and can be ignored until the other codes are fixed / cleared. What you may want to do is check all of the electrical connectors on all the computer-related sensors FIRST and make sure they are all good to go, then retest and go from there. This will help reduce spending unnecessary $$$ fixing the problem(s). There is helpful information in troubleshooting this stuff in the Read First: Technical Information thread (i.e. ECT sensor testing). Hope this helps further answer your question(s).
ok heres an update on my bronc. i reprogrammed the iac with directions i found on a thread here at fte. that seems to be doing better. i took the egr off and cleaned it the best i could, little low on monetary funding right now, put a manual temp gauge on, and it was the guage that was bad she stays nice and cool, never gets above 170. the main concern i have right now is this: when i first crank it up and go to driving it seems to be 'stuck' in first gear. i willl run it up a little and let off trying to get it to shift but it just coasts and then when i get back on it, its like the transmission is only pulling when i get back to the rpms i was at when i let off. this is very weird to me, never have witnessed one do this. after maybe a half mile of this it will finally drop into second. by the way, i started witht the selector in the D position. after it goes into second it fights its way in to drive, then when i push it up into OD it shifts right in. after all this commotion is over i can stop, then take off and it shift as smooth as glass. im stumped because the transmission was rebuilt 2 years ago, then the truck sat up since then, i have been driving it for 2 weeks, been doin it ever since i got it. help would be appreciated. im goin nuts burning gas and probably damaging something... i was thinking maybe stuck valve bodies.
Sounds like fun. I've heard that flushing an A4LD can be good or bad to do as well. What may have happened is that the truck sat long enough for the fluid to gum up some internals and you may need to do some maintenance (modulator replacement, check vacuum hoses, fluid / filter change). I can't remember if all A4LDs have the solenoid for the OD or not, might look into that if all else checks out as far as the tranny goes. Hopefully, the tranny issues didn't contribute to your idle speed problem. Did you ever get all of your ECU codes fixed?
