Was at the zone today looking into syntetic oil all the had was royal purple for almost 7.00 a qt..(don't think so) 15qt.@7.00 nope. But they had rottela syn. for 19.00 ,but my question is the bottle looked different than the dino rottela so I picked it up and read the back. It said it was rated all CI,CH well all except CJ-4.I've read that 6.0 are really picky about the oil they run on. Sould I keep looking for the CJ-4 or run this ? another question is How many mile can I get out of the SYN. /to the DINO?thanks for the input !!
If the auto parts storte still has the older spec'd oil (CI-4) on the shelf, then it is old stock.
The newer API certification is CJ4 and it has been out for quite awhile and is readily available at Walmart (they turn their stock over more often).
Yes, your 6.0L will be fine with either, but the newer CJ4 formulation is to offer better soot control and less viscosity breakdown. If given a choice, I would use the newer CJ4 spec'd Rotella.
I have used Rotella-Syn (5W-40) with no problems (old or new spec) but if given a choice... I like fresh new oil over old anyday... as well as I believe in the newer spec (CJ4).
BTW... Walmart sells their gallon jugs of the Rotella-Syn for $19.00/ea, so price being the same... go with the newer spec and get a better oil for the same money as the old stock at the auto parts store.
some poeple say they go 7500miles I was thinking about 5000 I know it's best to go 3000 w/the 6.0 but I want to go synthetic but the cost / mileage (3000) /$70.00

I change my oil every 5,000 miles and never worry about it. Only use Motorcraft (made by Racor) oil filters which can be bought for $19.00 or so at Walmart. They are of course OEM spec'd and better than WIX or other 'will-fit" filters.
The 6.0L shears all brands of oil down, so whether synthetic or dino, one should change every 5,000 miles (easy mileage interval to remember). USe synthetic for easier cold weather starts, better high heat protection and the like and not for extended oil drains.... your motor will thank you!!!
I have gone as long at 6,600 miles between drains (one time) due to a holiday trip with the family... but in 139,000 miles, I have never had an issue and this extra mileage was a one-time deal... but I never worried since I knew the Rotella-Syn was good stuff and I was still way below the recommended oil change interval.
An interval of 3,000 miles is a waste of money when using synthetic oil... and 5,000 miles seems to meets most people's needs and is an easy interval to remember (matchs up with transmission and other service intervals).
The "old" Rotella Synthetic 5W40 is good stuff and CI-4+ rated, but I would hold out for the CJ-4 since it has better soot control and won't shear down (supposedly) as fast as older oils. My last oil analysis on the CI-4+ Rotella Synthetic was done with almost 6000 miles and my oil wasn't even sheared down to where others are at 5000 miles and lots of my miles were done towing a 30' enclosed trailer. Blackstone even recommended another 500 miles on that oil because it was so clean, I was very happy with that. I'm going to start running the "new" CJ-4 synthetic at the next change and I'm hoping that an oil analysis will reveal even less shearing (which the 6L is notorious for and the reason why we should change our oil at 5k miles).
