temp guage, rad hose pressure!

2 questions:

My temp guage slowly goes up to N and stays there. I remember in the past I used to be able to see it go to the R, the stat would open, and it would come back to N. Could my stat be stuck open?

Also, the upper radiator hose has a lot of pressure when warm, I can't squeeze it with my hand. I don't remember it ever being like that.

Thoughts?

Thermostat could be sticking slightly open. Pull it out and look. If it looks ok, put it in a pot with a thermometer and throw it on the stove. Slowly raise the temperature and see what it does.

As for the pressure, that is controlled by the radiator cap. They're cheap. If you aren't sure of its operation just replace it.

I did this last week. Buy Motorcraft radiator cap and thermostat. That way you know they are correct. About $25 for both.

The hose pressure is normal, and it should be that way.
As far as the thermostat; based on my experience, no two thermostats are alike. They seem to all behave differently. Right now, mine goes to the O, then goes down to just before the N. It does this back and forth. Personally, I don't like the rapid change in temperature. I'd rather have it hang out around the N like the last thermostat I had. There could also be other non thermostat related factors that affect the way the thermostat acts..
