I am looking for some suggestions on header selection. I have a 1980 Ford F100 302. It is the stock motor that i have rebuilt. Nothing to racy, just put in a different cam, edelbrock carb and intake, etc. While I am doing this I feel that i should remove the old exhaust manifolds and install some headers. Thing is I am not sure what I want. Don't want to spend a forune, but want to get something that will help the performance and sound good too. I have dual flowmasters on there now. Couple of questions:
Is there a type that I can just bolt up with out any modifications to exhaust pipes?
Do I want chrome or black? I painted my motor ford blue and all the pulleys are black. It shoudl be real clean when done. Just wondering how difficult the chrome will be for a weekend driver?
These engines need long tube headers, shortys make no power gain, so you will need to do som exhaust work. Do a search, it was covered recently as far as brand reccomendations
I would think shorties would be some improvement wouldn't they? As far as color you only have two choices. The silver high temp coated ones, or the brown ones(rust). The black ones turn into the brown ones in about 1 hr running time.
Shorties would make for an easier fit versus the long headers, and it might allow me to bolt up to my exiting pipes...that is a might though. If I went with long headers I would have to redo my entire exhaust for one side. The pipe doesn't go straight back, so it causes a problem.
So the black headers turn colors also? I thought just the polished/chrome ones did that.
Do you have any suggestions on a brand? Any better than others?
I liked the Hedman's I bought at one time, but they were the 16 gauge type, which is nice. The other ones I have bought are the cheapy flowtech ones, which are ok but they didn't last but 5 years on the salty roads.
Normally I like long tube headers, but really did not like how they fit on these year trucks. There is no good way to get the driver's side exhaust out, either on the driver's side or crossing over to the passenger side. And they hang down too low for me.
Yeah I agree with you. I don't really want the long headers to stick out too low, and with these models it seems incredibly difficult to route the pipe on the driver side. When my exhaust pipes were installed we had hell of a time running that side. That is why I hoping I can use a shorty header and not lose much, if any?
I live in Texas, so salty roads are not a problem here. I just was wondering if the polished ones where worth the extra money.
