Hey everyone, I checked previous threads about cruise control failure and I didn't see my exact situation discussed, so here goes......
My cruise control no longer works. When I turn it on and then set the speed, the green cruise control light illuminates very briefly and then goes right back out and the speed never sets. Obviously, there is power there, as the light turns on and then back off. I checked the fuse diagram and see no mention of cruise control to check. Also, I have already had the cc switch recall already done.
I had the same problem with mine. I also had the cruise control recall done. This involved the dealer installing a small wire harness with a fuse in it, that's connected to the switch on the master cylinder. What appears to have happened in my case is the contacts for the fuse in this harness got corroded. I pulled the fuse, cleaned the contacts and it works fine now.
Like I say mine doesn't have a light, however when I would try to turn it on, it felt like for a brief instant it was trying to engage, which sounds like what yours is doing. I bet cleaning the contacts on the fuse in the harness installed for the recall will fix your problem. If it was a blown fuse, your control light wouldn't come on at all. Be sure to let us know what you come up with.
Madsonp- I switched out the fuse and it wasn't the problem. I thought it would be something else because of the light flickering, but I'm not an electrician so I really wouldn't know.
Usually when the cruise stops working, the first thing to look at is the pressure switch mounted on the master cylinder. Mine stopped working and the switch was leaking brake fluid and shorted the switch and/or wire leading to it.
The 9F924 part from Motorcraft for around $21.00 will take care of the problem. It is a very simple job to do.
Just be careful with the brake fluid as it is very corrosive.
