cab swaps

Can someone please tell me if a cab from a early sixties Solid front axle pickup will fit a 66 twin I-beam frame? Is it bolt on, does it require fabrication?

TIA Todd

The cabs are totally different as far as the und pinnings go...the 65 and 6 2wd cab wont work on 61-4 trucks or 65 and 6 4wd trucks except 66 F100 4wd...the column is diffeerent as far as where it goes thru the floor on the early trucks and goes thru the firewall on 65-6 2 wd's

Its not a bolt on...alot of fabrication would be needed...the steering boxes are also different on the early trucks vs 65-6 as I recall...and the 4WD trucks use a different box as well....
To me, the column location on the early trucks is alot more uncomfortable then the 65 up trucks...the angle is alot different and impacts leverage as far as turning the wheel...
The twin I beam trucks cab are fairly easy to find as there were a lot made...If you already have the 65 or 6 truck and just wanting to keep it running w/o spending alot of dough and time modifying this and that...stick with the later cab...lot less headaches...

If I was going to go through that much work, I would try to go the other way, making the newer cab fit the older truck to gain some leg room. I almost tried it but didn't feel like doing near that much surgery. Frame width is different, floor pan different, firewall, etc.

It's almost like in 1965 our trucks came out of darkness into the light. You can add creature comfort to pre 65s but the cost is a lot more. IMHO

Why get an aftermarket tilt steering column when you can use a late 1970's Ford column? I found mine at a salvage yard in Washington and paid around $150.00 for it complete with the steering wheel. The only change I had to make to install it in the 65 cab was the connector on the wire harness for the turn signals and I had to trim the gasket a little bit at the firewall. This is a whole lot cheaper than any aftermarket setup I have seen and you can use FOMOCO parts in your Ford truck.

here's something for like dennis carpenter or someone to make. A steering column that looks mostly original, but has tilt. I personally don't like the looks of the '70s steering column in a '60s truck, it just looks so out of place. IMHO. I love the looks of people who fabricate things to look original but have modern functionality.

but they're high enough to where it doesn't really affect it.

I remember coming off the roof of a house, or somewhere while roofing with my grandpa. I went right across his hood. I don't think I damaged it, but I was old enuff by then to know better. I said,"Ah, I proably shouldn't have done that." And it was the only time I remember hearing him say, "Maybe I should leave this to your cousin." ......Oops.
I'll have to remember that (amongst many, many things) when my little one tears up something. Ha!

I am going to continue my search for another 66 cab for my project. I need the fenders and all the sheet metal minus the bed. A bed would be good too, but I need the cab to get rolling again.
