64 rebuld advice

Hello all!
I'm rebuilding (or considering having it done) my grandfathers 64 f100. Originally I wanted it all original, but after talking to someone whoes been rebuilding classics for a long time, he pointed out that if I wanted to keep it in the family and leave it to my daughter, I'd proably be best off updating it and making something she'd want to drive. After plenty of thought I think he's right.
So my question is; Does anyone have any links to good technical schematics or sites or otherwise to figure out where to start, how to swap out the suspension/steering for a new one, etc.?
Sorry, I know you guys get allot of questions over and over. That's why I figured I'd just ask if anyone had good links that they have saved or used they'd be willing to pass on, and I'll do my own research.

Thanks for any help and God Bless.

Welcome. Although there are dozens of folks here who are more than willing to help you out when you have questions, I would suggest you first use the search function and do some reading. These subjects have all been covered and the pros and cons of a variety of solutions make for interesting reading. Keep in mind that the 64 and earlier slicks are very different (especially in the suspension dept.). With that knowledge in hand you will be in a better position to ask specific questions. Just my 2 cents.

I've started on two trucks now. The first was a 64. I always start with this motto. No reason to go fast if you can't stop. Start with brakes and go from there. You should also decide if you want to keep the original straight front axel or switch the entire front end out for an updated mustang unit or something else. Power steering/power brakes are going to cost you a couple bucks. At least now there is an option for power steering on a 64 (rack and pinion type from no limit engineering). AC is also available for a 64, but its around $1,000. Power steering, power brakes, AC (comforts) will run a little under 3 grand assuming you do all the work. Best advice I have is to pic 1 or 2 things and make that your goal. Finish that, then start on the next goal. Before you know it you'll be broke, tired, and have a cool looking truck that you won't want to give your daughter for fear she will wreck it.

Power booster and master cylinder with proportioning valve built in.

1957-64 FORD F-100, POWER BRAKE BOOSTER KIT (ZINC) - Performance Online

Front wheel disc brake conversion.

1948-64 FORD F-1/F-100 TRUCK, FRONT DISC BRAKE CONVERSION WHEEL KIT, 5-LUG - Performance Online

Back drums can still be bought over the counter. Not a bad idea to go ahead and buy a new rubber brake line for the back also and also buy a roll of tubing and run all new steel lines also. This is the setup I bought. Felt like my truck was going to do a front flip after this conversion. New shocks did the trick. Well theres your first $800-900. While your at it, get rid of that pressure sensitive brake like contraption. There is an article on here about converting to a plunger type sensor that hooks to your brake pedal. I have a couple pics of this conversion also. Only problem with this setup was I had to cut the brake plunger(metal rod) to get it to fit. Other than that it was just a direct bolt on. I had a 223 and hooked a vacuum line to the manifold and it worked fine.

Get to wrenching!
