keep an eye on craigslist. I found a Jasper rebuilt 351 with under 10k on there 2 months ago for $500. Good things can be found on craigslist. I've had better luck there than on ebay or the junkyard.
From my research, a 460 produces 230hp - 390 tq, whereas a 351 produces 210hp - 305 tq. Not really that much of an upgrade in hp for the headaches a swap would cause. You can easily beat the 460s numbers with a cam upgrade alone when rebuilding the 351. Massage the heads, intake, and exhaust and you'll have a fire breathing dragon.
Rebuilding/Upgrading your 351 is a cakewalk compared to messing with a 460 swap. And there are alot more go-fast goodies out there for a 351 than a 460.

yeah but torque is what moves you. snd there is a big difference between 305 and 390. dad has a 87 f350 with a 460 that has a comp cam, hedman headers (long tubes), edelbrock alum. intake and a holley 650 carb and it only gets 10m.p.g empty babing it and 9 pulling a trailer getting on it mildly.

400 ft lbs TQ is no problem from an EFI 5.8, and so is high teens fuel milage with an OD tranny and the right gearing for the truck. You can have your cake and eat it too.

I absolutely hate the 351. Bigger is better. Get a 460. And i've only heard bad about the E40D tranny. But these are my opinions, I don't want some "351//E4OD" enthusiests flaming me.

The only downside I think with my 460 is that the gas mileage sucks!

There absolutley nothing wrong with a 351. It's my favorite Ford motor. And if bigger is what you want, build a 393 stroker.

I did some research and found a stroker link. Scat Ford Stroker Kits 351W to 396 from RPM Machines. This was the 500hp option. There was also a 750hp option.

i have no problem with a 351w. i have one in my 89 truck with a fairly fresh rebuild, but i have driven a 460 and they arent even close.. .oblivously.... if there is any one out there that would want to trade a 460 for my 351 i would be up for it.... but i doubt there is.
the fuel mileage does suck but like someone said earlier it doesnt matter whether the truck is pulling or empty gets around 7-10. with a 460 you have more displacement which means more power, there is no replacement for displacement...
just my opinion though

A properly built 351w will have just as much power as a 460, and get better mileage too. There are some aftermarket cams that work well with the stock EFI system. I see no reason not to rebuild the 351w. Sure you might have more money in the 351 at the end, but you will KNOW what you have. Who knows what's been done to a junk yard motor, and that will probably need rebuilt anyways. The E4OD is a TOUGH transmission, they put them behind the 7.3 diesel, the 460, the 351w, and the 300I6. You could get it behind the 302 as an option, but the 302s all came with an AOD/AODE standard.

ya but if you would put the same money you would into a 460 as a 351, you would have a heck of a motor. and would know what all you got into it

That's the thing, you're gonna spend twice as much on the 460 because you'll have to BUY the 460, and it's computer, and it's wiring harness. That's all big bucks even at most junk yards. Then he'll have to upgrade the transmission too, as he's got the E4OD, and it has an integral bellhousing. It will be cheaper and a LOT easier with less down time to rebuild the 351.

What I would do to save time and money and frustration......

Order everything to rebuild your motor........except pistons, rings, and bearings......but get gaskets, seals, oil pump, cam and other goodies........

Call the local machine shop (I usually use carquest in bangor, ask the local auto parts stores for a good one) and see when they plan on not being busy.

Within a day you should be able to get the motor out and stripped down and taken to machine shop, by the end of the week know if you'll need oversized bearings and what size pistons, by the end of week two have it all back and together and ready to go!!

And here is a copy/paste price for a 318 I built a few years ago......should be a close ballpark

-------------------------------------------

I got all the machine work done, and now I just need to order the rest of the parts to finish the motor......So here's all what I had done and what it cost from Carquest. The reciepts don't have all the work seperated, so I can't break it down for ya, but here it is......

Heads...........$272

Decked, hotdipped, valve job, new seals and freeze plugs, magnafluxed

Crank...........$188

Rod and main journals ground .010, micro-polished, oil holes chamfered, and cleaned

Block and rods(ouch).......$477

Decked, hotdipped, cam bearings and freeze plugs installed, magnafluxed, bored .030 over, honed, mains line honed....rods cleaned and checked for straightness, pistons pressed on, ARP wave-loc bolts pressed in

Rebuild kit......$308

pistons, rings, bearings, gasket set, HV oil pump

Cam, lifters, timing chain, valve springs....$267

Edelbrock performer-plus line...

There!! for $1512, you can have your old stuff like new. For around $1300, you can get a 360 long block all together from Jeg's, but without heads. So with what I've got done, this should be a good platform for a bomb-resistant small block.

Then you figure what you want for intake, carb, what brand of headers, type of ignition, plain or fancy valve covers, etc, things can get more and more expensive. I got a $100 Eddy intake from Mudpatrol and a free 600 Holley carb, and Hedmans for $135. So everything else is priced right out at jegs.com or summitracing.com, but hopefully the prices of machine work and such will give someone a good idea of what they're getting into.

you guys have brought a lot of info to the table. I think I will start keeping my eye open for a 460 with a tranny. This way I can get them both rebuilt and any mods I want done. I would really like to go with a C-6 tranny do to more aftermarket support. And I can keep my truck on the road while the engine and tranny are getting rebuilt. Thank you all.

Not only does the C-6 have plenty of aftermarket support, but it's also a very durable tranny. I don't think many would argue if I said it was the best auto tranny for this gen.
