Has any one else had continuous problems with the slave cylinder on their Ranger? I had a garage install one about 3-4 years ago at 80,000. I had to install another about 10 months ago, and now I am having the same problems (difficulty shifting into reverse and first) that I know I have to replace it again. I installed the last one with my father.
I'm assuming you have an M5OD. I guess I am surprised replacing the slave the last time resolved the shifting issue you describe and wonder if that just masked over another issue. What is the situation with your clutch? Have you replaced all of its components?
Do you get any water in the master cylinder? Check the master cylinder cap & gasket and make sure you at least have Ford's insufficient weatherstrip for the hood. Still, Custom's probably right. Describe the reasons for the new ones thoroughly for everybody. And be gentle with the clutch when it's stiff with cold. Work it until it moves easily before driving. And that's often a sign of getting water in the system.
the slave gets blamed a lot but I found my problems were with the master!
I put in an expensive slave and still had problems ended up with a bad master. when I pull the trans now I just replace the slave and master for GP's. Its a PIA to pull the trans then have to pull due to slave, although I did have a bad slave and had to pull again. Masters are about $40, autozone sells a lifetime slave for about $50. I have all the AZ parts in mine except for the master, they have changed the parts no questions when I took the trans out, they said bring em in.
So look at the master and make sure its good but since its primarily made of plastic (and in france) they are cheap enough to replace to eliminate having to pull the transmission.
I did this one time, and one time only, you need a helper for this-try pumping your clutch pedal 5-6 times, and hold it to the floor, then open the bleeder while the pedal is being held down(do not be in front of the bleeder when you open it)..I had a burst come out that shot about 3 ft.-and it was foamy-then refill master-then I did a gravity bleed-pedal is just fine now...
