I researched some undcarriage spray on options to protect the X's underside from all that salt/sand spray on the roads. POR-15 and other permanent sprays seemed expensive and I figured would just hide problem areas till it was to late. So, I decided on trying TC-11 FMA Product 1. Mfg says it lasts 2-3 months, so I figure 2 applications a winter. They also say a gallon coats ten times, so with the X I figure about 4 sprays (so 2 winters). Any thoughts on this or any other undercarriage products to protect from salt?
I agree with Jake. Just give it a good rinse. Also, if you did want to coat it later, you won't be putting anything on the undercarriage that would keep the coating from bonding.
Besides, most of the body rust will occur within fender or kick panels or behind body cladding if your truck has any.
I do the car washes, but I feel that something more should be done. If I do "get what I pay for" sounds like your an advocate of a permanent product.... I'm all ears! $5 a coating seems like a cheap bet. There has to be a reason why I see washed/well maintained northern cars with some rust spots.
whjco - I do have a limited and the threads about the mouldings causing troubles have fueled my paronia :-)
You have caught my attention now. I have to ask this out loud. What about Ziebart undercoating? I have never purchased it, but have always wondered if I was missing the boat.
I got the dealer applied undercoating and paint protection (Still not sure how they talked me into it at about a grand) but I have a high volume normal pressure hose at work and regularly flush my truck with mass amounts of water \especially on the underside and in all the door jambs and try to go along the edges of al the body cladding trying to wash any salt out I can. A big spot is at the back of the quarter panel, hook a hose up right behind the back corner, you'll be amazed how much dirt and junk you will wash out of there. Salt loves to build up there and just sit I'm sure. I also go around the trailor hotch as much as possible as well.
