missing under load

Okay my situation is simular as another but want to start my own here.
I have a 97' expy 5.4 w/106000 mi.
Lately it has a miss in it at about 40mph (when it starts) or say when I go up a hill or any kind of load, I can gradually get it up to highway speeds without it stumbleing but it will still stumble when giving more gas or again a slight hill. It has never given me a check engine or a code to kinda guide me in the right direction of the problem. Any ideas? fuel filter, fuel pump? anything I might do before I go to the dealer,(In this case a dealer I REALLY trust.

prob a COP or plug

mine did the SAME thing exactly but you prob need to change the filter anyway

wait til it throws u a code
It might take awhile cause the engine has to do that long enough to set the CEL off
i would try to hammer it up hill and such til it throws a code
then take it to Autozone and have them tell you which cylinder
then buy the plug and COP and take it to a garage
should be fairly cheap and not take more than 20 min
get both plug and COP changed

DO NOT GO TO DEALER!!!!!!!!!!!

unless you got nothing else to do w/ your hard earned money

I think, like dr cabela said, you have a bad COP or spark plug. It's typically recommended to change all 8 at the same time, because when one goes out, the others don't *normally* take too much longer. I think an offbrand set of 8 costs approx 100$?

i agree that you could get the COPs cheap but the labor on all 8 will be outragous
Ive had to replace #4 twice and #7 once
never needed to change the others and it has 155,000 on it

I'de love to hammer the throttle to try and get a code thrown but I dont want to damage my wifes weekend workhorse.
I get prefriential treatment from them, believe it or not, due to the fact that I have bought all my fords from them four to be exact. If it turns out to be my coils Im having
them upgraded to better ones. but I'll start with the fuel pump and filter myself first.
anymore sugestions are welcome.

filter yes fuel pump no
have you ever replaced a fuel pump........get ready for some real money
the COP at an auto shop are only 50-100 bucks plus a $4 plug
and no it wont ruin your engine to hammer it or at least keep the pedal so that it keeps hesitating then you will get your code
if the COP is bad its bad
if the plug is bad its bad
both need to be replaced anyway
I guess its your money though
The stealership wont get anymore of mine though
and yes i know people there too who wont "screw" me

i know the problem seems like a major engine problem but it is not you just have to be patient but if the money is burning a hole in your pocket then......................

Same thing happens to me. Won't throw the code at first but will eventually. Sometimes it throws a code right from the start. I've changed 4 COP's so far and have 90,000 miles on it. After you replace the #4 and #8 the rest are easy

Coil On Plug...no plug wires or distributer. Each plug has it's own coil that sits on top. You can't see the spark plug unless you remove the COP

It stands for Coil On Plug.

Our new Ford COP’s, the Sultans of Spark(S.O.S.), have
been designed with both durability and performance in mind.
Please see them at:
http://www.performancedistributors.com/soscoils.htm
Quality was the main feature we stressed when we went to the
drawing board on these coils.

You have the COP problem. Had to replace them all on my 1999 expy as they slowly went out between 175K and 200K. Paid $40 a piece at Autozone and finally just did them all. My current 2003 expy started bucking at 175K and I just went ahead and replaced all eight because I wanted to be done with it.

my 98 Expediton has a 4.6l engine, and there are two coil packs, one for each side of the engine. all four coils are in one pack. last time I changed plugs and wires it was still missing and popping so I replaced both of the coil packs too, it solved the problem. Make sure you use platinum plugs too, I use the Bosch Platinum + 4, they are a little expensive but my Expedition has 224,000 miles and runs good.
