I have a '93 F150 XLT 4x4 5.0 liter auto trans. When going up a steep hill in drive, it does ok for a while, then suddenly the engine(?) feels like a couple of plug wires are disconnected.... it stumbles badly. If I downshift, it smooths right out and has plenty of power. As soon as the load/hill is reduced it shifts up, and stumbles again. Imagine a VW bug with 2 plug wires off. If I get onto level road again, the problem stops. I changed the plugs (old ones were way old but clean as a whistle). There is no smoke, no knock. Any ideas? It's driving me CrAzY! It is the same hill every day. Some days it cruises right up at 50 mph in top gear, other times...the problem. Thanks, Hal in CT
By the way, the truck is 'new to me' and I have to say... I really like it! So does my wife. Now that's a GOOD thing.
First things I'd do is check my fuel pressure, and scan it for codes KOEO and KOER.
Under load stumbling I'm not sure of what it could be as there are so many emiss, ignition, and vacuum related emiss parts that could cause this, but you might want to look in to the distributor as in cap, rotor, dizzy, etc. Maybe a full rebuild on the dist would cure it up.
