Easy Rear Diff Question

I changed the gear oil in both of my diffs. On the rear diff, what is the small toothed part that looks like a chain ring opposite the ring gear? It is about the same diameter as the ring gear. Also, is my rear axle a Dana 60 and front a Dana 50?
Thanks!

Well, I can help you with the diff. id.

The front is a Dana 50 and the rear is a Sterling 10.5.... make sure you add a modifier if you have a limited slip.

Not sure about the chainring thing...

Sterling 10.5?
Never heard of that. How does that stack up to a 60?

Don't know about the toothed part, sorry.

For your pumpkin; here's a little reading for you. It does not go into much detail but I think it provides some helpful info.

I assume the toothed ring you are talking about is the tone ring for the speed sensor in the 10.5.

That's what it us. The tone ring for VSS sensor for the ABS.

Glad I asked, would of never figured that out. So that is why my "ABS less" F250 did not have this ring.
Thanks!

Maybe. The tone ring pulls double duty on the superduties. It is the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) as well as the ABS sensor. For your other truck to not have a VSS on the pumpkin, it would have to have a VSS on the transmission.
