I'm trying to start the 223 engine in my F-100 but all it will do is buzz and a little smoke comes from the neg. battery cable. I have a ground from the bellhousing to the firewall, positive from battery to starter solinoid, and ground from battery to solinoid and from starter to solinoid. Any ideas???
Glad to help . Isn't it funny how you can ask someone something and all of a sudden the light bulb goes on. I hate when that happens. Glad to see that you figured it out. Good job. If there is anything else don't hesitate to ask.
Ok, I charged the battery overnight and the motor still turns over slowly. The ground from the firewall to bellhousing sparked. Is it still a grounding issue?
You should be running the negative battery cable directly to a bolt on your engine block or at the bell housing. Then a separate grounding strap, one each, from the engine or bell housing to both firewall/cab and to frame.
Positive battery cable goes to BATT post on the Starter Solenoid.
If a cable is sparking, it's loose or it's a bad cable that's partly cut or corroded through - tighten it or replace it.
