Well, with the help of a good friend who works for a Ford dealership, (thanks again!!) who was kind enough to run the VIN 1FMSU45P15EA44685 for me and showed no real issues, I now own this very well kept 05 Excursion with 39,000 miles on it. I've been reading so much about coolant, EGR, head gasket issues, that my head's kinda spinning??? Whats the best place to start to get some peace of mind on this motor? It has a Banks power pack system, I mean the whole system, big exhaust, air cooler, and big intake. He told me that he never had the selector switch above 3, it goes to 6, and neither have I, I've left it alone. The previous owner used the truck to tow his race cars around to different tracks. He kept great service records on the vehicle. Changed the oil every 5000 miles! I am also a stickler for proper maintenance, but would like to know what I should do, or have done from this point forward to have it inspected? It doesn't leak a drop anywhere? I have seen no indication of smoke, oil in the coolant? But man,....before I take this truck on a long hunting trip, I need to have some peace of mind that all is well. Where to start?
When I bought my 05 originally I was really excited about all the expensive mods that where added that I did not have to buy. What I was not excited about was the dealer I was going to for service told me that I must return the truck to stock to receive ANY warranty work under the 5/100K.
From what I have read, Banks engineering is smart and makes good products but most Ford dealerships will not care nor will they waste time trying to diagnose any problems you may have with your vehical in its current modded condition. You might also risk the truck being blacklisted so every dealer will deny your claims.
If you care about warranty work, you may want to start collecting stock components.
Me? I'm waiting till I break 100K before I start having any real fun.
Congrats on the buy though. I would really love to have a 6.0 Excursion. Other than that drive the heck outta it...
The warraty issue is not 100% true. I bought an 06 used and it haad all the stuff on it you have. I made sure that the dealer would honor the warranty before I bought it. I got it in writing and they even gave me a 48/48k Ford Premium Care Warranty with a 50.00 deductable. I am sure that you will be ok. I ahve had no issues related to the Banks equipment installed...with that being said I have since removed the Six Gun. I did a lot of research on that systme and the others out there. Becareul with "shift on the fly" tuners. They are not good for the transmission. I removed mine and went with a SCT Xcal 3 from Innovative with custom tunes. You will be much happier and it works well with the other Banks stuff I (we) have on our trucks.
Make sue you change fuel filters regularly 10-15k, and kep the oil changed at 5k intervals. If and when you get some extra $$ buy a stock air filter and related components it flows enough for 500 hp and it will hold a ton of dirt. It doesnt need to be changed til the filter minder comes on.
Out side of that use a quality fuel additive and stay up on the maintence and all should be well for you. Good Luck with the new ride.
It is the dealers preference on what they service. I know dealerships that won't work on lifted trucks for crap sakes.
loujr, for peace of mind. Check with your local dealer if they would have a problem with the mods on your truck. I was simply giving you a heads up based on my experience. It is, however, great to know that others have not been troubled with such BS.
I own a 05 X with the 6.0 in it. Bought it brand new. Use it to haul the family and pull a trailer for work. Now has 42K on it, no major problems. Just a bedplate leak. This is the second ford with a 6.0 that I have owned.
