<TABLE width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD vAlign=top>* Figured I'd better start a new thread as I might get a better response this way, instead of at the end of the fluid question posted previously.* Went to Lowes and got the 1.25" 5/16 bolts yest. and if it gets warm enough today I'm going to swap the covers. I got the grade 5 bolts, grade 8 were zinc-colored while grade 5 were silver. Will torque to 24lb/ft but I have one question- there were fully threaded and thread-1/4" shoulder bolts. Now I'm thinking it SHOULDN'T make a difference but I know if I got the bolts with the shoulder below the head, they wouldn't fit thru the cover holes. Maybe, maybe not, but I got the threaded ones to be sure. Did I do the right thing? I mean only torqing them to 24 lb/ft the grade 5 bolts should be fine, right? I also got flat washers. And I also have 4 qts Mobil 1, took Valvoline back.

Posted this on the 6.o forum- no answer and I've got the cover off and ready to start install of new one. Thanks- Tim
What kind of cover the 08 finned cover? You're fine regardless, I'm not sure the real reason for not threading bolts all the way other than it probably saves some money. Bolts are made to fit if they are 3/8" then the are that size the whole way. Grade 5 is fine.
Why are you changing the bolts out?
Just to get new stuff (silver), or????
And where did you get the '08 cover?
I have the lube and sealer, waiting for a decent day.

The 08 cover requires different length bolts. I think they are longer. He got the cover off Ebay, but you can get it from FTE Parts guy for a pretty good price.
Yes, you will need longer bolts. I got 5/16-18 x 1.25" grade 5 at Lowes with the 1/4" flat washer- so it wasn't so big and silly looking-for $3. The alum cover is thicker, and I think the stock cover bolts are only like 3/4"? But yes you need longer bolts.
Tim,
How much friction modifier did you use? I would like to do this mod and at the same time get my LS differential to work a little better. I have read that Ford calls for 8 oz, but using less works better. I just wonder how much less?
