exhaust

truck:87 f150,302, AOD

right now the truck has dual tips after the muffler. would there be any benefit to switching to a fat single exhaust pipe? i've heard that if you have too much exhaust flow, you lose low end torque. would i notice an improvement off the line, or anything, if i made the switch?

No, you woudnt notice anything. I would leave it like it is. The less backpressure the better.

You will lose low end driveability with too little backpressure in an otherwise stock truck. In this case, however, the backpressure in your exhaust is taken care of by the convertors and the muffler. A muffler-back change probably won't do much of anything. A converter back change (to a free flowing exhaust) may not even change much. Something like straight duals, no cats, and hi-flow mufflers would hurt low end but give you more top end power.(not much use in a truck)Be sure to use an H-pipe or you will really kill the lower R's.(if you do choose duals)

Funny, I have duals after the convertor w/o mufflers and stock convertor, and I could tell a big difference in both low-end torque and slower high-end torque. Then I decided to put on Headers and eliminated slow high end!

In general though, lower backpressure means more power, but you can go overboard.
